The actual question, on the second line of Alex’s post, was how to make the two external monitors the first and second display, with the laptop being the third. You can specify the primary, but there’s no way I can think of to specify the secondary.

I gathered that primary wasn’t the issue – it’s telling OS X which of the other two screens is the secondary display.

I’m guessing you have a MacBook Pro with retina rather than a Mac Pro but in any event, there’s not much you can do with customising the display in FCPX. Unlike Premiere, it pretty much is what it is.
As far as I know, in OS X you can specify the primary screen, but with more than two screens, what it chooses as the secondary is in the lap of the gods. Maybe someone knows a third party utility that can set it?

Definitely strange, although i went through a similar issue not so long ago and I suspect something had corrupted with the FCPX install. I did a clean install the other day and multicam syncing is now the fastest I can remember it being in months.
One thing that can help when it’s going slow is to add a marker at roughly the same point (it doesn’t have to be exact) in each clip..
On the plus side, as someone once told me during a Sony Vegas masterclass back in the day, that five or ten minute wait is the perfect opportunity to grab a coffee, find some sunshine, relax, and take what is probably well-earned break.

With this, and your previous post, I’m wondering if you don’t have some wider system issues…
What version of FCPX and OS X are we talking about, and is the media stored inside or outside of the Library file?

It helps but in my experience FCPX’s multicam syncs just fine anyway. Yesterday I had two cameras and some audio clip to sync. Camera A was date time stamped correctly but the audio clips were timestamped Jan 1, 2012 and the second cam had the correct date but the time was about three hours behind. With the angles set, I just selected all and created the multicam clip. It took maybe two minutes to assemble about 90 minutes of footage into the right order.
Very glad it did because I was showing a doubting friend how well FCPX could handle syncing multiple camera angles 🙂

Just a note that you can also batch rename files in the Finder if you are running Yosemite or El Capitan.
My other thought is that you could use the Photos app to organise the videos, especially if they originating on an iPhone, and just access them from the Photos browser inside FCPX. That lets you sort by date and location, etc.

I would have thought hardware thunderbolt issues were few and far between. (I’ve never had a failure) but your issue certainly sounds more like hardware than software. I used to try and figure out all of this stuff myself but I’ve recently become a big apple support user. It’s definitely worth chatting to them about the possibilities.
