There’s really not much else to optimise. With FCPX it’s GPU, RAM, and external drive speed, probably in that order.
Its how fast you can get files on and off your external storage that’s usually the biggest bottleneck when it comes to editing.

Last time I had to do something like that, I saved my sanity by using Resolve to batch export the clips with the clip name and time code burnt in.

The great thing about FCPX is its flexibility. You can import clips to the browser, quickly skim through them and cut them straight to a timeline, You could string all the clips into an empty ccmpound clip and do what you’ve always done. Or you could add keywords to make stuff easier to find later. Whatever works for you and makes the shot you’re looking for easier to find.
The one thing pretty much everyone finds, once they embrace the FCPX way of doing things, is that you can edit much faster in FCPX than you can on a traditional NLE.

I think that would be a good case for using a compound clip to hold your original clips.
Of course, you could always just skim through all the clips in the browser without doing anything more than importing them, and give you more options for sorting on the fly – but dumping them into a compound clip would also do what you want.

From personal experience it feels slightly faster to render under El Capitan but as far as I know, there’s no specific support for Metal in the current version of FCPX.

Yes, it’s definitely happy with two GPUs on the new Mac Pro. Maybe it’s the fact that the GPUs are mismatched in this case.

I have a similar setup with a Samsung 4K monitor on my Mac Pro, scaled down. Essentially, it gets treated like a retina screen but it’s not exactly the same so I guess there will be a few discrepancies. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed the size difference between the two. My thought though, would be that a computer monitor is a preview at best – why does it matter?

It’s possible, but past experience with FCPX leaves me wary of its ability to relink. I think you’d want to do a truckload of testing before committing to it as a plan.

Actually, if he could do without the third screen, I guess he could run the laptop in clamshell mode and jus.t use the two external screens.
