The bars and tone generator was one of those things that never made it to FCPX. Ripple training had a free replacement generator at one point.
Personally, I just got Resolve to generate the bars and tone as a clip and I bring that into FCPX as needed.

You’ll be getting that message because the files are in a format that fcpx has to transcode or rewrap in order to use so you’ll need to make a copy of the files no matter what but, depending on the source format, fcpx will more likely just rewrap them than transcode them to ProRes. The setting you mentioned is the format for its render files and optimised media files rather than imported files.
You can choose the destination of the copied files by setting it up as an unmanaged library with the media folder set to be on your external drive.
Having said that, I usually use EditReady to transcode or rewrap the files to a new folder, then import the new files rather than getting fcpx to do it. I just like to have a little more control over the folder structure and file naming, etc.

No, you can have multiple copies installed at the same time.

September 16, 2019 at 6:26 pm in reply to: FCPX now the only major NLE without BRAW support[Craig Seeman] “Apple gains nothing by excluding BRAW support and increases the possibility of the move to Windows as editors move to other Mac NLEs with BRAW and then have the opportunity to easily move to Windows when it comes time to make new purchases.”
I doubt I’d ever move to Windows but I’ve shot nothing but BRAW in the last six months and, as much as I love FCPX, that’s meant editing in Resolve for all that time. I now have two machines where I haven’t even bothered installing FCPX. I’m sure there are plenty of others out there doing the same.Blackmagic’s new version of their Video Assist monitor/recorder adds BRAW support to the Panasonic EVA1 and the Canon C300 II with more cameras to come. If Blackmagic stick to their plans, BRAW is certainly going to become an option for a lot of shooters going forward. I’ll be interested to come back in a year and see how many cameras have a BRAW option vs a ProRes Raw option.
I’m sure Blackmagic are actively working on getting Apple to add support for BRAW but Apple haven’t felt the need to add support for any other raw format (CDNG for example) so I’ll be surprised if they feel any urgent need to add BRAW either.

The license is tied to the Apple ID used when purchasing so as long as that’s the same on the new Mac, you can just go to the App Store and download the apps again.

September 15, 2019 at 8:35 pm in reply to: Edit repetitive job via coding (as opposed to FCP X interface)You’d probably be better off editing an XML file than trying to modify any project files. It doesn’t take much to completely break the project database.
But even then, by the time you do it and check that it’s worked, there’s probably not much gain over what you’re doing with Keyboard Maestro. Keyboard macros are my usual go-to for semi automating stuff in FCPX.

September 15, 2019 at 8:20 pm in reply to: Removing plug-in effects from FCPX Effects PanelNot really. If they’re simple Motion based plugins you can delete them from the Motion Templates directory but I’d expect most of the core melt stuff wouldn’t fall into that category. Do they allow you to choose what you install? Maybe uninstall all of the plugins and reinstall just the ones you’re using.

Unfortunately, there’s no going back. There’s no way to open a newer library with an older version.

The operating system doesn’t have a lot to do with it really.
You open the project in FCP7, check that it’s ok and make any adjustments recommended in the 7toX documentation. Export that project from FCP7 as XML,
You then boot back to high Sierra, run 7toX and it translates the XML into fcpxml. Open that in FCPX and start resolving any issues from the translation.
That’s about all there is to it.
