Migrating an FCPX install to another iMac
This is more of a hypothetical at this point, but I’d still like to know. My iMac is the oldest one in the shop. It has installs of FCPX and Motion, along with the Adobe CC suite. I like having two choices in one machine. Nobody else in the shop does anymore. If they replace my existing iMac with a newer one, how can I migrate the existing, purchased copy of FCP and Motion into the newer iMac, without any new expenses?

The license is tied to the Apple ID used when purchasing so as long as that’s the same on the new Mac, you can just go to the App Store and download the apps again.

Would I have to first un-install on the older machine?

No, you can have multiple copies installed at the same time.

As Jeff said, no need to uninstall FCPX or Motion, but you’ll definitely want to make sure you move your plugins / templates – doubly so if you’ve built any yourself. Purchased plugins may require licensing maneouvers prior to decommission (CoreMelt is one).

I have just gone through the process of migrating to a new iMac using the migration assistant. However it is important that you deactivate any plugins that you may have installed before staring the migration. Once competed you will then have to enter the activation codes for them on the new iMac. I found this out the hard way having missed deactivating my Coremelt plugins – I then had to go back to the original machine and go through the deactivation process on that prior to activation on the new iMac. If you have only one instance of a plugin having been install (ie, on one machine only) the it may be likely that you will not have to deactivate that as most plugs can be installed on up to two machines.
