Sounds like the hard drive was in the process of failing and has finally given up the ghost. Probably why AME was crashing.

The only difference I can see is that I have Output Conversion set to “none”.

Just tested it here – 4k to my HD monitor via the Mini Monitor is output as expected. All working fine. You might consider resetting your preferences or reinstalling FCPX and/or the BMD drivers.

Haven’t used mine in a while because the drivers kept crashing FCPX but there shouldn’t be anything to do. Just hook it up and the downconversion happens automagically.

No, but you can do it quickly by turning off the appropriate role in the timeline index.

It’d take a 300,page reply to answer all those questions and they’re covered pretty well in the various training videos that come up in a Google search.
But to get you started ….
Q1: In FCPX everything is connected to the primary storyline. What’s the primary storyline of a music video? The music. So the music track goes on the primary storyline and the rest of the footage is connected to it so there is no sync issue.
Q2: you can edit the keyboard shortcuts but I’d advise against it. Having come to FCPX from using many noes, including Vegas, it’s far better to learn the native way of doing things. It can get a little frustrating but it’s worth it in the end.
The rest you’ll get from watching a few training courses. I’d recommend something from Ripple Training but there are some comprehensive free ones out there.

EditReady will rewrap AVCHD files. It also embeds any matadata that would have resided in the sidecar files like .thm, etc.
And, just in case this is what you’re asking when you talk about media being ingested into the library, the FCPX ingest won’t copy files into the library bundle if you set you project to externally manage media. You don’t get any control over the folder names but they will end up in a Finder folder. But if the source it AVCHD, FCPX has to make a new copy of those files somewhere.
EditReady just gives you more control over the final filename, target location, etc.

You can’t leave AVCHD files in place. AVCHD has to be rewrapped before use so FCPX has to do that amd create the new files wherever you told it to keep it’s media. Ifmyiu want more control over the destination, format, etc then I’d suggest using something like EditReady to do the rewrapping/transcoding before importing into FCPX.

Inside FCPX, I’ve tried them all and I don’t think there’s anything better than the Hawaiki Keyer. It’s a brilliant Keyer and importantly, has all the analysis tools you need to see what’s going on with the footage and choose the right teqnique to pull the best key possible.
Outside of FCPX you’ll probably get a slightly better result faster using a nodal compositor like Fusion or Nuke, etc. I like Primatte in Black Magic’s Fusion a lot but i haven’t been able to justify buying Fusion and Primatte in the free version is a little too crippled to compete with Hawaiki.
