  • How to view 4K project on my HD broadcast monitor via BlackMagic Mini Monitor?

Posted by Brian Covalt on February 22, 2017 at 6:15 pm

I hope there’s a way to do this.
I’ve got 4K source material that I’m working with in FCP X.
I’d like to use my Flanders Scientific LM-1760W broadcast monitor to view the picture so that I can look there for my vectorscope instead of sharing space on my primary monitor.

I understand my HD monitor is not 4K and won’t show 4K, that’s okay. I’m just hoping I can somehow down-convert the 4K video in my FCP project so that I can view the image on my external monitor.

The Flanders monitor is connected to my Late-2013 Mac Pro via thunderbolt with a BlackMagic Mini Monitor.

    Thanks for any tips.

Haven’t used mine in a while because the drivers kept crashing FCPX but there shouldn’t be anything to do. Just hook it up and the downconversion happens automagically.

Right, but that’s not the case.
It doesn’t down convert it automatically, or automagically.

It does in Premiere Pro and After Effects. 4K sequences and comps appear on the HD monitor because it down converts the image.
But so far, in FCP X, I just get no image at all.

you may need to futz around with the Blackmagic utility to force it to output the correct signal. Also make sure it’s selected as the A/V output device in FCPX.

Just tested it here – 4k to my HD monitor via the Mini Monitor is output as expected. All working fine. You might consider resetting your preferences or reinstalling FCPX and/or the BMD drivers.

hmm.. still can’t get it to show.

Thanks for testing on your end though; that’s somewhat encouraging that you can get it to work.

Here are my settings in the Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup app:
Under Video tab I have Output Format as 1080p24.
1080PsF On is checked, as is Remove Field Jitter On Pause.
Under the Conversion tab, Output conversion is set to: HD to SD, and Display As “Letterbox”.
    The driver version is 10.8.3.

In the FCP X preferences, under Playback, A/V Output is set to:
    Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Monitor 1920×1080@24

Are any of my settings incorrect?

The only difference I can see is that I have Output Conversion set to “none”.
