In that situation, I’d probably batch the clips through something else to fix the field order prior to adding them to FCPX, don’t know if there’s anything that can do that and keep the AVCHD format, but I’d probably use MPEG Streamclip to convert them to something like ProRes LT.

Hope you get it worked out…

It depends on what I’m doing but I usually create a folder with project name, then a media folder inside that, and I either copy the entire contents or I just drag the clips over – depends on the source. It shouldn’t matter either way.

Most of my Canon clips are rewrapped (but still h264) using Magic Bullet Grinder so that I have properly embedded timecode.

One last thought, have you tried just dragging and dropping the clips straight from the Finder into the event? That doesn’t open an import window and just uses the import settings as set up in your preferences. Could be worth a try…

Just tried that with a bunch of captured PAL 1080i HDV clips, changing them from upper first to lower first and back again and the changes to the multiple files stuck, so it does work.

There’s obviously something different about the Canon AVCHD files if they’re being mis-interpreted as being progressive (just checked a whole bunch of 1080i AVCHD from a Sony camera and FCPX had the field dominance right) so maybe that’s causing an issue?

    A re-install might be worth a try at least…

I think it’s you… I have no issues copying files to a hard drive and then importing to an event without copying, which is to say the check box is active and I can un-tick it when importing files from my t2i, 7D, FS100, GoPro, ATOMOS Ninja, captured HDV tapes, etc.

The error you are getting means that there was an error importing the files and FCPX will keep referencing the originals until you restart the import.. the error could be anything that prevents the copy – from insufficient drive space, to the computer going to sleep, to a faulty cable causing intermittent dropout of the connection.

You’ve already trashed your preferences and I can’t really think of anything else that might fix it. That would have been my go-to option. have you tried trashing FCPX and reinstalling the app?

If all else fails there was a n import app called XfcpX that I think should work for you. https://pika.dk/?p=472

  • As above, fixed in 10.0.7 and I can edit all day without a single crash. I’m not sure what bugs 10.0.7 is supposed to have but I don’t personally know anybody who seems to be any worse off for updating.

Unlike previous versions there doesn’t seem to be any change/update to the project files between 10.0.6 & the latest version so I’d suggest back up the older app, and give 10.0.7 a try.

  • The only thing I can think of would be to turn each clip in the timeline into a compound clip then sync those new virtual clips with the audio, then cut up and reassemble. Mighty time consuming and I’d be ready to jump off a bulding by the end but it’d work if there was no other option.

December 27, 2012 at 8:27 pm in reply to: Major Issue Importing Slowmo Clips in FCPX Project

One more note – just tried conforming some 50 fps footage to 25p, exported it to AE, did a couple of things, exported it out at the default lossless preset, then bought it back into FCPX and the playback was perfect. That’s on a late 2012 27″ iMac…

so it doesn’t seem to be a general issue with FCPX or AE, which means it’s either a codec issue, a system issue, or a conform issue on your end.

Another thought – also check what frame rate each app thinks the footage is running at. You’d assume you’re getting 24p in and out of everything but you never know.

Hmmm… Just so I’m clear, you render to either Animation or ProRes codec, which play fine in QuickTime outside FCPX. You put that clip on a FCPX timeline and it plays back choppily… I assume the project is the same resolution as the footage you’re rendering from AE?

Then, when you render it from the FCPX timeline, it’s still choppy? Really sounds like AE is doing something to break the codec. Maybe try running the clip through something else, like MPEG Streamclip, and see if that fixes anything…

And which version of ProRes? I can see the Animation codec and maybe ProRes 4444 having issues but other flavours of ProRs should be fine on that system. Are you doing anything else to the clip once it’s back in the project timeline?

Just trying to rule out all the possibilities….
