  • I don’t have any XD cam stuff around – but did you check for a Reel name in the browser? Also did you check all the hidden browser columns?

“All hard drives fail — it’s a matter of when, not if.”

I’ve had them all fail, usually the day before I have to output.

is it important? Have at least 2 copies and a Raid 5 or better.

Last, ‘about two years’ is when google found that enterprise class hard drives tend to malfunction more frequently. Citation

January 24, 2011 at 4:56 pm in reply to: Output 10 Bit to Mini Dv

[Rizwan Saeed] “Do I use SDI or Component?”

If your DV deck had both of these connections (it’d have to be DVCPro25 or DVCAM), I’d go SDI over component.

[Rizwan Saeed] “Is it possible to connect my laptop with a blackmagik SDI External Card to output without losing quality?

Nope. No internal cards can go on a laptop. AJA and matrox both make devices for output from a laptop.

  • Harry, you killed an essential file that has metadata in it (crucial for FCP recognizing it.)
Therefore FCP couldn’t see it anymore.

The camera would continue to put stuff on the card – it probably can handle the error condition when the file is missing.

When you formatted the camera? The camera placed new clean metadata files there and now FCP can see it again.

Moral of the story: Use the camera’s delete + format to clean up it’s card.

I couldn’t find that template (I found spin and spin cluster, but not spin cycle)

Here’s the deal – you can rename anything in your layers. You could take any group, layer, filter or behavior and name it something else. You could put it in your favorites or save it as a template, and it respects your made up name.

I think this (may) be one of two things. Either your compression is set too high (don’t go above 7mb/s if you’re using uncompressed audio, 8 if you’re using AC3), or possible the video is in the wrong VOB for the split.

January 24, 2011 at 4:42 pm in reply to: change frame rate

Motion won’t let you change the frame rate of an existing composition.

Import it into one with the timing you want. I have no idea how it’ll handle timing and animation in general. Probably frame based.

Yup – just tested it. Its setup to be the ‘exact’ frame timing (ie the 125th frame is still the 125 frame, regardless of the fps)

    Lara,

Basically, it’s taking into account for the pixel aspect ratio.

January 24, 2011 at 3:13 am in reply to: Alpha channel in Mpeg streamclip

MPEG Streamclip certainly has the right price. It’s not meant for overall compression (although many use it as such.) It was a tool (open source) developed to deal/stream MPEG 1/2 files. My guess is that they consider it a pretty nearly ‘finished’ product.

It’s clearly not set up to access the alpha channel of QuickTime files.

If you want the alpha channel to be used in your editor of choice, Animation, Millions of Colors + is what you want. You do not want any compression – as the alpha channel will be compressed and damaged, yielding a bad key effect. And you can do this in AE directly.
