AAC is probably your best bet. Set it to VBR to save the most space. 128 kbps is a pretty safe average setting. Less than that is still pretty good, certainly ok if your entire video is just someone talking. Going above that might be worth it if your audio is complex, but you should probably do some tests. There’s no sense setting the bit rate higher if you can’t hear any difference between that and 128.

Do you have any firewire devices plugged into the computer? If you have a camera or a deck plugged in it’s possible for Photobooth to think THAT’s what it should be using.
If you have everything unplugged from the computer and running Photobooth STILL doesn’t turn on the green light then you might have an actual hardware problem. I’d take it to the Apple store at that point as I don’t know of any way to accidentally disable the camera if nothing is plugged in to the computer.

You didn’t give enough details for me to say for certain, but almost anything that connects with USB will probably work on your Mac.
Here’s 4 questions for you:
1) What programs do you use on your PC now? (What things do you do with your computer?)
2) How much money are you planning to spend on a Mac.
3) What monitor do you currently use? (Size, pixels, LDC or CRT, DVI or VGA)
4) What items are you trying to re-use? (Like, what kind of hard drives?)
Tell us those and we can start to give some useful advice.

The only way for Windows to mess up OS X is for it to somehow affect the hardware. Like, a virus that damages the entire hard drive, not just the section that Windows is on.
I think that kind of thing is very rare. Most Windows viruses just mess up Windows which, yes, is bad for the Windows part of your computer but it shouldn’t mess up anything else.
At any rate, it can ALL be avoided by keeping Windows offline. I have Windows on my Macbook Pro and I use it for some specific programs that are Windows only. That’s all I need it for and I don’t use Windows to connect to the ‘net. It’s pretty darn safe if you use it that way!

According to Apple 5.0 doesn’t work at all on Intel Macs. So the fact that you have it working at all is above and beyond anything they’ve promised. I’m certain that any problems you have are related to that. Once you get 5.1 you should be fine, it’s been perfecly fine on my Macbook Pro.

I don’t think there’s any way to run 2 monitors on the laptop. I mean, you get the laptop screen AND an external, so that’s 2, but you can’t get 2 in ADDITION to the built in screen.
Also, for any machine, buy extra RAM from someplace like crucial.com and put it in yourself. Much cheaper than having Apple do it.

I have a firewire 400 RAID on my G5 Powermac. The Powermac is connected to an intel iMac over a gigabit ethernet network. Accessing media on those firewire drives, I’ve edited 3 camera shows using the multicam feature on the iMac. It works just fine!

Yes, the update problem indictes something is wrong.
I’m pretty sure removing Quicktime isn’t going to help you since Final Cut Pro is based on Quicktime. Removing the QT app isn’t a problem, I don’t think, Final Cut will still work, but whatever problem exists will probably continue to exist within Quicktime.
Have you tried erasing the Final Cut preference files? At worst I’d suggest you trash anything having to do with Final Cut or Quicktime, re-load everything from the Final Cut discs, and then run the system updater.

Well, trashing the app will get rid of it, but that should be exactly the same as if the program is closed and not running.
What I’m getting at is that whatever problem you’re having now might not go away after trashing it!
