Well, to be fair, i don’t think Adobe said Pro2 did HDV export, which is what you are working with. It does do HD (uncompressed), with the appropriate hardware.
The upgrade should be worth it for you.

Search the web for “panorama software”, you’ll probably turn up some things like “Pixtra”, “panorama tools”, and “Stitcher”. Software apps that will stitch together images into a seamless pano. You would probably start with a few exported still frames, each overlapping the previous by about 1/3. Then let the software do it’s thing. It’s easier than it sounds, and none of the programs (except possibly Stitcher) are very expensive.

Go into QTime and change the playback settings for your rendered movie to “High Quality”. For some reason, on the PC, this is off by default, and my guess is that’s why the video looks horrid: you’re not seeing what’s really in the file.

If you mean renders so the timeline will play real-time, Premiere calls it the “scratch disc”. Look under “preferences” (not project preferences). This is not project-specific (at least, not in PremPro 2), but is changeable at any time.

Does not the institution you’re at have editing? (Maybe not, there are lots of Masters programs that you might want video for) If so, what is supported at the school? At least you could poke at it for a day or two and see if you like it. Then try a demo of the other. NLEs can be a very personal choice. There are still some things i really miss about Velocity (a DPS/Leitch editing system).
I would venture to say that all current NLEs are quite capable. And quite capable of frustrating you in the middle of a project… all of ’em.

DVD-video (NTSC) is _always_ 720×480. You get a 16:9 aspect by setting the project to “widescreen”, and export 720×480 anamorphic (with a 1.2 pixel aspect ratio).

My guess is you are recording on analog equipment? That is normal– sort of. The problem is from the many different audio scales used.
Digital audio is expressed in dBFS : decibels Full Scale, which cannot exceed zero without clipping.
Analog is typically dBU : decibels related to a peak magnetic saturation, which can exceed zero, and clips/distorts gradually, which is why you can bounce the needles/LEDs to +3 or a bit more, and things sound fine.The relationship also varies depending on where you live (no really!). I think the EU uses -18 dBFS (digital) = 0 dBU (analog). U.S. levels are -20 dBFS = 0 dBU.*
If you are not using analog metering for acquisition, then something REALLY wacky is going on. Tell us more.
If you are using analog metering, then you recorded your audio a bit low, but not as low as you might have thought from the Premiere levels.
*corrections welcome, the above is only my best recollection of the analog-digital relationship. My excuse: I do graphics…

What size (in pixels) is your original?
What size do you want on the DVD?
Is it 16:9 or 4:3 ?-jeff

This is only a wild guess, but: what is the graphics card in your machine? And does that have either the “certified” or newest driver from the chip manufacturer (like nVidia)?

…and if you want truly better SloMo, though i have not used CS3 (I usually wait for the x.1 release), you might want to try a demo of Twixtor from reVisionFX. Very nice sloMo, though it will take some rendering time.
