Hi Greg,
I’ve made some progress by updating to ALL the most recent CalDigit HW and SW drivers. HD720 sequence play in Machina, and can be used in Premiere (non-RT) via “Premiere file seq”, but not “AJA file seq” import. HD1080 is still problematic.
I tested with various combinations of stripe sizes and block format, basic vs. dynamic disks, none of which affected the ability to use sequences, though I did get the best read/write speeds from 256K stripe size and default block size on a dynamic volume: R/W of about 300/400 MB/sec, and that’s with a PCI-X connection.that’s all i know at this point,

Use something with better spatial algorithms than Premiere, such as AfterEffects.

Get a DVD player with y/c or component out, digitize to a format you can edit with. The conversion is real time. After messing with importing VOB as MPEG, or trying conversion software, that’s what I’ve found working best.

It’s typically called difference keying, and it typically doesn’t work.
Good luck with it; personally, I’d plan for many hours of rotoscoping.-jeff

I’d suggest you would get better (though not faster) results by doing your keying in AfterEffects, then doing your edit in Premeire. For greenscreen, we typically cut without bgs, then take the select clips with 2 sec. padding and do the keying. Then bring in the finished clips and do a conform.

As far as I know, exports are CPU-based, so a new video card won’t get you anything. On the bright side, you just saved some money!

Good point by Vince; hopefully 24Pn will be supported real soon, as it is the sensible way to do 24P with P2.
I think in CS3, even though you can load in P2/MXF, you will have to render to work in the timeline. That’s supposed to change in CS4.-jeff

720p will be native if you have the I/O card and RAID to support it. Check AJA and Blackmagic for their offerings. But without the extra muscle, you would be limited to HDV. Not sure what CS4 will bring regarding P2 and MXF, XDCam, etc.

It might be worth trying a test going from 50P to 25i. You would gain temporal resolution (50 fields/sec) with a trade off of less spatial resolution.
