cutting render time
Hi Premiere guys,
I am producing a 30 minute show that is using blue screen keying with some complex graphics. The dual processing editing computer that has CS3 is not very fast. What would be your suggestion to cutting down the render time for this project? Would it make a difference if I completed everything but the keying, then rendered the project and left the keying till last and rendered the project again?

Hey Roberta,
Keying is whats killing your rendering. I’d be cautious of how much you do in a Keying environment. There are no short cuts. You need a faster computer. You can render out chunks and patch it back together with the AE keyed bits done as a seperate job with another computer over a network.

I’d suggest you would get better (though not faster) results by doing your keying in AfterEffects, then doing your edit in Premeire. For greenscreen, we typically cut without bgs, then take the select clips with 2 sec. padding and do the keying. Then bring in the finished clips and do a conform.
My 2c; your workflow may need something else.-jeff

I’m a Matrox RT.X2 user, and with this hardware added to PC, keying is REALTIME, along with most other effects. NO RENDER at all, even in HD

Thanks guys for the suggestions. It sounds like segment rendering is my best option.
As to buying the Matrox card, it’s a studio owned computer to which the studio just spent a lot on new hardware and software. I don’t think the director can ask for more at this point. I’ll suggest she check it out and she might choose to add it to her wish list for the future.
