    Hi Folks,

Can you recommend a suitable video card?

I’m running CS3 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I have (I think) a pretty decent hardware set up except for the video card.

I have spent most of this year editing a set of HDV projects, which will run to about 12 hours of finished material.

Within the next month I am going to have to export all the finished edits, and from tests done so far I know this is going to take weeks, rather than days.

I am keen to tweak my system in any way I can that will give me a significant improvement in export time. I will have to weigh up costs to benefits – it’s not worth spending $1,000 on a 5% improvement but it would be for a 40% improvement.

I am reluctant to upgrade to CS4 at this stage as the project is near completion and I don’t want to lose time ironing out any glitches, bugs, compatibility problems etc. I have to say the upgrade to CS3 and Vista was a nightmare, though eventually things did stabilise.

The obvious target for an upgrade is a new video card. I am quite happy with what I’ve got, the only benefit I can see in upgrading would be for improved exports.

    My current system specs are;

    Graphics Card:
    NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT

    CPU:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

    RAM:
    8GB

    Motherboard:
    ASUS P5N32-E SLI PLUS

    Hard drives:
C drive (project files & media cache etc) NVIDIA RAID STRIPE 931.52GB (2 x 500GB SATA2 drives) 538 GB free
F drive (video and audio files) NVIDIA RAID STRIPE 1.81TB (2 X 1TB SATA2 DRIVES) 502 GB free
    G drive (back up for C & F drives) ADAPTEC RAID STRIPE 1.81TB (2 X 1TB SATA2 DRIVES) 155 GB free

    Monitors:
    2 x Samsung SyncMaster 226BW

Any suggestions/recommendations for improving export performance, particularly for the video card, would be most welcome.

    Many thanks,

    Guy

As far as I know, exports are CPU-based, so a new video card won’t get you anything. On the bright side, you just saved some money!
