All I know is that I bought my brother an electric toothbrush for X-mas, and he only had carry on luggage. They stopped him and gave him hell because they saw a “device”. It was just a stinking electric toothbrush and since he just got it it wasn’t charged. What sucked was that they insist he turn it on to prove that it was a toothbrush. When they found that it didn’t work, they detained him until he could charge it and prove that it worked.
I couldn’t understand why, but then I heard about the underwear bomber and it made perfect sense. TSA has been freaking out lately with a lot of stuff so I wouldn’t be surprised if they at least make you turn on your equipment to prove it’s really a camera.

January 10, 2010 at 5:46 am in reply to: Help in render settings for my deliverable fileSo, I’m confused. How can I solve my problem? Do I need to take my large file and split it then re-render it or something? I’m not sure what the solution is to that…sorry.
…I actually have a choice of sending my deliverables on DVD or through FTP. Since I have to do both a master and a split without grafix, plus just audio all in one folder, I pretty much have to keep it down to one DVD disk or small enough to send everything FTP.

“There are times where I have searched up and down the forums knowing that I could not be the only one that has had this problem, but cant find the right answer. Sometimes it just doesn’t work.”That’s usually when I do post. And I know I’ve come up with some interesting ones. (i.e., high in the sky videography) But I try, and sometimes I do forget, to do a search first. I already can tell you that I would have 3 times as many posts if I never searched for my answers first…but I digress…
I think it’s a good point about some people who don’t understand good etiquette, but I give people the benefit of the doubt if they don’t post often in any kind of forum…as long as they try to be polite.
Oh, and like mentioned above…If I too have ever forgot to respond or say thank you…THANKS TO EVERY COW MEMBER THAT HAS HELPED ME IN THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE! You guys are the bomb! Fo Shizzle my Cowizzles…..Word-UP Yo!

I had looked into TurnHere and thought it was pretty decent. But not for making money. TurnHere hires you like a retail store contracts out local service repair businesses to come to your home and fix your Console TV. To start it’s exactly how it’s been described. You are assigned businesses that sign up for a 1 minute video. (They also have a program right now where you can go door-2-door and offer their first promo video for free, and you still get paid to do the work). You go out, have them sign release forms, film the interviews, shoot your B roll according to their interview(s) then do a quick editing job.
Apparently they score your work and if you constantly do good work, then they assign you to Bigger clients. You get paid $200 for the small work, and I have no idea what you get paid for the big ones. I actually haven’t gotten a call from them to do any work yet, but they did say I can promote my business as long as I don’t take their client away from them to finish the job I was contracted to do. Which is pretty common terms in my experience in the sales world.
Again, it’s not much money, and I see it more as a way to promote my business for other things. While you;re there tell them, “I think this will really help your business and we’ll take good care of you, but have you thought about your other video needs? While TurnHere can get you started and fulfill your online video needs, (hand them your card) I can show you some other ways to utilize video to help promote your business! When would be a good time to come back and share with you some other options? Let’s shoot for next Tuesday?”
I don’t condone this as the best line of work, in fact I can’t see anyone making a living off just this unless you sell your butt off!! But when it comes to playing the numbers game…it’s another resource for getting business.
Remember, when the economy is good…Promote your business.
When the economy is bad…Promote your business even more!Jeff Bonano

Grinner is technologically up to date as much as I am. I just build my own Invoice in Word, then I send a .pdf version to my client via e-mail and in person just in case. I like .pdf because they can’t change it when I send a quote to them.
And while I keep a copy on my compy, I still like to kill trees and file a hard copy with any “paid” notes or “faxed date” notes, etc…
I find it’s easier to jot down a quick note on the back of my copy of the invoice just in case I forget something. I just pull their invoice and paperwork whenever I need to reference something. Including how many times I’ve tried calling them for payment and the time/dates attempted.
…but then again, my business is still small enough that I’m not overwhelmed by too much paperwork come tax time. It’s bad enough I have to deal with tax exempt government clients, but that’s pretty much the worst of my paperwork!

If you don’t have it already, O&E insurance may not be a bad idea if you start anything serious. If you do end up saying, “This Cammy 9000 model didn’t hold up against the ElectroCam ZX8 when it came to sharpness and image quality.” But it was only because you never knew that the Cammy 9000 had a small “better than ElectroCam ZX8 sharpness switch” located under the battery release switch, then you might run into some problems if the company that built it got upset over the whole ordeal.

Do you have a lot of pre-comps in the time line and do you have everything on a separate hard drive aside from the one Premier and Encoder are installed on?
Also when was the last time you defraged your hard drives?
A lot of times this can have an effect on Encoder because it likes to have all it’s ducks in a row before it gets to work. The more work that is required in the comp and the more difficult it is to access the hard drive, the longer it takes to start the process.
Remember, Premier doesn’t save the actual assets in the Premier file, it references them to the file. Once you start rendering it is when it pulls all the resources to build your project frame by frame. When it’s hard to find all the parts it will take longer.
I hope this helps, if not let’s figure something else out.

January 6, 2010 at 4:02 pm in reply to: Followup with project out of town…need suggestions!I agree on the RC plane thing considering I don’t even own one, I think it would be just a cool shot in general on my own time if I ever learned to fly one of those things!
You know, off the subject for a second, I think a lot of people have problems with heights like this because they feel they have no control over if they fall or not. They worry if the knot will slip or the harness will come undone. If you are flying a plane (as apposed to to riding on one) you feel that you have control of your safety. Ladders are the same way. A high enough ladder and you realize you have no control over if the ladder will fall or if you will fall backwards or……..oh crap, now I’m getting the heebie jeebies just thinking about being on a ladder!
