Before Bob starts sobbing, let me be the first to inform him that Sonnet will have a USB 3.0 PCIe 2-lane card next month with Mac drivers!!!

That should get me another drink ticket for next year!

Avid is already using the Kona 3. But I just don’t see them moving their architecture to QuickTime. Heck, it would be a miracle is Avid would simply not skew color every time it has to import or export to QuickTime. Is that asking too much?

You have one BIG problem here. Perhaps I missed it, but I don’t see that you have any SAN software. Thus, you do not have a SAN. Is the fibre switch zoned so that it is only one computer and the one RAID set? If not, all your data will be corrupt.

That said, you really need to have someone who does this day in and day out. You have an IT department that is out of its comfort zone. You have a complex system and the Cow is probably not the best way to get your very expensive equipment up and running. Just look at your lovely experience getting your SFPs for your Brocade.

We have installed HP storage before in a Mac environment, but that was using the higher-end EVA line which had Mac OS X specifically supported. In fact, we have it working with a Brocade switch. The EVA line runs screaming fast and it’s installed in a 20 seat SAN for uncompressed HD. Your unit does not support Mac OS X. This may be one of the issues.

August 11, 2009 at 6:49 am in reply to: LHi & DreamColor

In fact, you MUST send the Dreamcolor an RGB signal, as everyone has said so far. In addition, you also MUST send it a Progressive signal. It doesn’t even like a PsF signal. In fact, it is spelled out in this document… https://tinyurl.com/dreamcolorVID

After you get through all the misleading BS in the top of the document, they sprinkle in all the things you can’t do and how you shouldn’t do x, y, and z.

As Bob has pointed out, you really need the Gefen box as its converter box. Otherwise, check out FSI monitors.

Granted, on paper, the Dreamcolor looks like a great monitor. BUT, it was designed to be connected to a RGB graphics card for 3D application. Yes, the allure of a LED-backlit monitor is very sexy until you have to deal with a video/YUV workflow with multiple resolutions and formats.

    Stefan,

If you want to integrate your Omneon into your workflow, you will need certain options for that integration from Omneon. You will need to know what your “house codec” is going to be. What tape format are you currently using?

From there, you can then make a plan with an integrator. We do it all the time.

November 22, 2008 at 8:24 am in reply to: HDV Problems FCP 6

No, No, No, and No Everyone take a time out. In order for HD to work with FCP, you need an Intel proc. The ProRes codec was optimized for Intel. On some systems, you may get a Dual Quad-Core G5 to work, but just barely. Being on one of the slowest G5 systems, no chance in he11 that’s going to work.

You can, however, use DVCProHD instead.

August 15, 2008 at 11:45 pm in reply to: 16:9 Studio Monitor Options?

    Matthew,

You will need to take a step back and read Bob several posts on the Cow. If you take the time, you will realize that Bob is extremely helpful and quite knowledgeable. While Bob can be very sarcastic, many, if not most, of us on the Cow love it.

As you found out, he has a pet peeve for people who are trying to do things on the cheap for the sake of doing it on the cheap. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. FYI, I share the same pet peeve.

As such, if you made so much money, as you purport, than you should take that wad burning a hole in your wallet and spend it on a proper monitor. To that end, you will have a tough time finding one for less than $3500, in general.

    Otherwise, lighten up.
