Argh. I’m trying real hard not to buy this font

David- If I understand you correctly, you will need to render out your element over black, with an alpha channel. The alpha channel is like an embedded matte so that only the element will show through, and the semi transparent parts will come through as semi transparent.
But since you are using this on an NLE, there’s another step. Some NLEs (like Avid) will have a black line around an object imported with an alpha.
What I do is import the 3d mov into After Effects, and render that out STRAIGHT (not premultiplied). This will add pixels around the edge of your element. This mov will be your fill. You will add on another module. Change the setting to ALPHA. This will be your matte.
Import these two movs into your NLE, and use the matte as a luminance matte.
This way you won’t have any black edges, and your semi transparent areas will be perfectly clean.If you need more technical guidance for AE, let me know, and I’ll go into more specifics.

Motion will certainly playback graphics realtime, and do titling, but it sounds like you want something else. -

Robyn’s solution is a good one for better control.
This is an EZ hack I figured out last winter. The results are respectable:
In Illustrator make a star with star tool and apply zigzag filter.A decent star to start would have around 8 radials and a small radius.
In zigzag, try both smooth and corner points. Each gives unique results. -

12 hours is over the top. We used to have to pull those hours because 80% of the time we were waiting for renders.
Shops that routinely work 10 hours and over are less efficient than 8 hour shops.
Your brain has to slow down to survive a long day.
If you know you’ve only got 8 hours ahead to get the job done, you burn in blue flame mode.
You work more efficiently. You don’t feel like crap all the time and you look forward to coming to work.
Work fast and get your ass home and have a life! -
