If you use this machine for a ton of internet stuff then you might have run accross a virus aimed at JUST 3D/Compositing/Animation softewear.

I’d start with some anit-virus, spywear stuff and check it out. I’d recommend AVG 7.0 (out of Germany , I think) good stuff.

But then again–deinstalling and reinstalling is easy. Don’t put all your 3rd party plugin on right away. Do them in pieces and make sure they work first.

The way around buying a hi-end workstation like the HP-whatever or the Dell-690 ($8,500 and up) is to have it build by a local computer company. I ran accross one in St. Louis the other day called…J&B Technologies. Web page at https://www.jbtech.com.

These places are full of geeks, they have all the same parts, processors, cards etc…they just assemble them into a more regular looking box. Hell of a deal.

I’m sure you could build this baby (Dual Xeon CPU’s 3.73 GHz, 4 Gigs of RAM, NVIDIA Quadra FX 4500 512 on board RAM and 2 21 monitors) for half the above.

Nope…I have no relatinship with them at all. They just did some repair for me.

Number on things you can use. Digi Effects has a nice “fire” effect, Boris has BCC Burnt Film and BCC Fire both would work nicely. On the free side you should have the CC Burn Film effect (it’s under the Stylize menu in AE 7.0).

Or you can do a search for “fire effect” and see what turns up.
