Animate the parameters of the Roughen Edges effect to eat away your layer. Use a duplicate of the layer tintet black and matted with yet another instance of the same layer, but this time treated with Simple Choker to get a black “Inner Glow” for charing effects. Fire can be created many ways from Fractal Noise to using Particular to stock footage. Search the archives for some hints.

Number on things you can use. Digi Effects has a nice “fire” effect, Boris has BCC Burnt Film and BCC Fire both would work nicely. On the free side you should have the CC Burn Film effect (it’s under the Stylize menu in AE 7.0).

Or you can do a search for “fire effect” and see what turns up.
