  • Brent,
I too am in the same boat as you. I left Sony Vegas a few years back because of the same lack of fixing problems.
I have been seeing the same issues creeping into adobe, more features but not enough fixes. I have found the only way to stay editing in premiere is to have multiple systems – 2 on mac, 1 on windows 7, 1 on windows 10. I only have 1 system that is on cc2018 and thank God for that. With all the problems that Adobe has now, it seems very similar to where i was in Sony Vegas. Moving to windows is not as bad as you would expect and I have had to edit a couple jobs this year in Sony Vegas simply because premiere would not load the files nor would Resolve, or FCP.
This is a very frustrating topic because there is not a clear “Best NLE” out there and it is getting very old to pay monthly for a product that kind of works!

I have the exact same problem with the crash on import. It is completely random and only happens when i try to directly import. When using the media browser to import, i never have this problem. I also have random freezes when i do a “save as”
These are problems that have been around for a while, but I left sony Vegas to work with Adobe CC to avoid these kind of basic crashes and I have to pay a monthly fee for this???

Boy do i remember when Sony tried Xpri….it sure looks like Catalyst will do the same…..just vanish away.
They dont learn from the past!

I keep BCC9 on Vegas, but i put BCC10 on premiere. Vegas is not capable yet of using a lot of its most interesting effects. It is to come in a later release….but i would not hold my breath because this is the same SONY who told us at NAB last year that Vegas was not going away and it would be used with Catalyst. What a surprise to find out a year later that that was not in the plans at all. (not surprised)

I have to say that i am getting great results from adobe cc….yes i have a few more mouse clicks, but the trade off is worth it, especially that sony is going subscription. Sorry to see Vegas die on the vine, and i miss the sonic foundry days when there was true support.

I saw the death of vegas last year when the vegas develop team was cut down.
I made over 100 videos last year with vegas and will be editing legacy projects with vegas for a couple more.
However…since i am in the business and have already have adobe cc, i have started editing with premiere.
First i have to say subscription is going to be the future as much as we dont like it – just as sony is now going to do.
Second – i have real time, full preview playback!!!! something i wanted with vegas for YEARS.
Sure there are a couple things that i like better in vegas, but its refreshing to edit without crashing, and full preview playback, and a lot of my plugins with vegas can work with premiere!

I hate to see this day come for vegas, but we kind of knew it was coming.

Sony does come up with great products, but their greed gets in the way as it did with sacd, bluray etc. Both great products but the public didn’t like the costs and moved on. Now we have catalyst product line that is moving too slow to be full featured and Vegas that is not moving forward very much at all. People wont wait for sony to figure this all out and will move on. I make a living with Vegas and would hate to see it go away and catalyst is not up to the task as of yet, so the more time that Sony takes to figure this out could mean the end of BOTH product lines.

Vegas has hard limits of how many quicktime clips you have in a project before it comes unglued. It does not matter how long the clips are but how many clips are in your project. There is also a limit to how many avchd clips also.
If i remember correctly its around 50 clips for quicktime and around 200 for avchd. I have this happen to all 3 of my systems. If i get boat load of AVCHD material, i render it to either xavc or mxf and this takes all the troubles away.
