Posted by Rick Wise on May 15, 2015 at 9:13 pmI guess there’s no update from 13 to 14 this year. Or did I miss something?

May 15, 2015 at 9:16 pmYou didn’t miss anything. The past few years have seen a new version released at a trade show in Europe in October so we’ll have to be patient a wee bit longer 🙂

May 15, 2015 at 11:55 pmNo need to get unsettled, Vegas 14 and onwards will be forthcoming.

Yea, IBC2015 is in September this year so maybe the wait won’t be that long?

May 16, 2015 at 6:55 pmI’m glad to hear that. With Catalyst Edit out, I was getting worried, as I tried it out and was not impressed. Sony offering an upgrade price for Catalyst Edit to Vegas users got me worried.

May 16, 2015 at 11:43 pmWhat I think will be interesting to see is if the next versions of Vegas will get the new Catalyst Engine. If not, then Sony will likely carry both Catalyst and Vegas out a few more iterations, until the need for codecs or workflow drive Vegas users to upgrade.
It is possible that Vegas will be the next block in the catalyst chain, since Browse, Prepare, Edit, Vegas would fit the pipeline for feature editing. Just not the all-in-one/one man band methodology we have seen working in the past.
Browse = general viewing of dailies or materials
Prepare = DIT / Color
Edit = Assistant Editor / DIT
Vegas = Editor
“Catalyst ?? Output” = maybe batch output to MPEG-DASH streaming resolutions, and DCP.It does seem like the Sony Camera division releases in Japan should be in lock step with SCS releases. Vegas/Catalyst should be the given away with every Sony camera much like Blackmagic does with resolve, and their waveform software.
Just some thoughts.

“It does seem like the Sony Camera division releases in Japan should be in lock step with SCS releases”
That is actually correct and confirmed by Sony Creative software themselves.Steve Rhoden (Cow Leader)

May 20, 2015 at 12:27 amIMHO Sony will start putting most of it’s development resources behind the Catalyst product line. At some point they decided to develop a dual platform product that incorporates clip/workflow management, 4K, color correction etc to compete with Avid, Premiere, and Final Cut. They will still support Vegas for a while, but I see a lot of features in the Catalyst products that seem to point towards capturing a piece of the future high end NLE market.

If you ask me, that would be a solid business strategy. I think the fact that adding GPU acceleration has largely failed after 3 versions of trying to fix it, is an indication that it was time to retire the Vegas Pro code base and start again. This is what Adobe did with Premiere Pro. This is what Apple did with Final Cut Pro X. Sometimes you just need to clean the slate and start over fresh taking full advantage of the latest technology by design.
Being primarily a Mac user, I’m really happy to see them embrace the Mac platform. IMHO, this is where they need to be. I’m sure it will take quite a while to build up the deep capabilities that Vegas Pro has gained over the years so I don’t see Vegas Pro going away any time soon, but I do believe the new Catalyst Suite is where everything is heading.
