Thanks Peter, I’ll check it out. I’m spoilt – my ageing Fast 601 does the most wonderful smooooth slomos. Ah well, can’t have it all.

Thanks David. Funnily enough, 50% seems to give the worst problems in this case. It definitely seems to be a Kona/PAL issue. Walters’ sage advice about motion control, coupled with frame blending, has yielded much nicer results.

Thanks Walter, the footage is digibeta originally. Re-reading the archive I’ve tried your motion blur settings, and it has helped… I just find it interesting that the straight slomos look quite as bad as they do. Certainly not an issue when I’ve been editing DV native projects, or HDV come to that. I’m always a little wary of workarounds as thay often hide a problem rather than solve it, and they come back and bite you later…
Thanks for the input, and a merry Christmas to you…

Ray,
Simplest way forward – use the ordinary Colour Corrector filter, open visual filter controls, then use the eyedropper tool (you’ll find it on a square button to the bottom left of the balance wheel) to click on an area of your picture that should be white – a shirt, a sign, a piece of paper… this will ‘reset’ the white balance. Then dupe the effect for each shot in similar conditions. You might need to tweak the saturation a bit, but I’ve rescued some pretty nasty shots. It’s the simplest way (the 3-way CC can be a bit daunting for a novice) and works well.

Edit the spot. Let it air. Wait for a deluge of complaining mums screaming that their Timmy or Jemima isn’t that fat and they didn’t get in to modelling just so people like you could make their beloved look awful and how they’ll never do TV again and anyway magazines pay better…
Been there? Moi? Least you’ll know….
My advice – go for the most flattering. Seriously!

Adam,
I’m thinking of doing likewise – 2 queries…
What size do you use? I’m thinking along the lines of an A6 wide or A5, but I need it to be portable…
Also, does the intuos 3 support ‘mouse mode’ or relative positioning? I can’t get on with tablets that don’t let you ‘stroke’ your way across screen and force you to use the whole tablet area…
Cheers,
Jason

Thanks again, I appreciate the info… s’funny how the most basic things stump you if you’ve not come across them before!
Once again, ‘The Cow Rocks’, to borrow a phrase from your side of the water.

Wow Walter, thanks for the speedy reply. I hadn’t thought of trying the DV route… any workflow issues when we import the logs in to the main FCP HDV project? Will FCP try to digitise as DV or do I just override that?
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Thanks all, kinda what I was thinking… I wondered about HDV being better due to the different colourspace, so I think we’ll have to go with that shot greenscreen for the IV’s. I’ll make sure everyone has stiffly laquered hair and ban mohair sweaters 😉
I’ll let you know how I get on!

Hi All,
Just an update on the crashing – now much better, after running Macjack, then resetting PRAM (I know, try the obvious first) and resetting the PMU. Seems to be stable at last… fingers crossed. I’ll let you know if the cure is permanent.
HDV on a G4 seems fairly usable in terms of UI ‘snappiness’ though (especially with the GSATA raid being so quick) though render times are high – still, it’s sunny outside and we all need regular breaks right??
Thanks for the advice all,
Jason
