  • HVR15 and Macbook – no audio!

    Hi Cowsters,

I’m working on a project where the client is trying to log HDV (just log, not digitise) on her new-ish Macbook (not MBP). FCP runs fine, machine control via FW is fine, pictures are fine – but no audio is present on logging. If you ingest a clip the audio plays back in the viewer and can be heard fine via speakers or ‘phones – but nothing can be heard during the capture/logging process, which frankly is a show-stopper for logging. No external ‘phones jack on the HVR15 either. Audio meters indicate that it is coming through for logging, and all system volumes are up… what gives? Any clues?

As ever, your collective genius is gratefully received…

I think this is a by product of HDV. I can’t get audio to play on our Mac Pro either when digitizing from our HDV Sony deck in HDV mode. I have to listen to it directly off the deck which results in audio being about 1 second ahead of video. Incredibly annoying, but that’s what I get here.

Try downconverting the FW feed to DV and have your person log as DV instead. They should get audio then.

Wow Walter, thanks for the speedy reply. I hadn’t thought of trying the DV route… any workflow issues when we import the logs in to the main FCP HDV project? Will FCP try to digitise as DV or do I just override that?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jason

Nope, what you do is let your person log in DV.

On the machine that will actually do the digitizing, set your Easy Setup to whatever HDV preset you want to capture to. (1080i/60, 1080i/50, etc…)

    Now do your Batch Capture

You’ll see that FCP is going to capture using the current Preset, not the DV preset that was used during logging.

Thanks again, I appreciate the info… s’funny how the most basic things stump you if you’ve not come across them before!

My pleasure. Be sure to do a quick test to ensure it all works correctly on your end. Have the person log a few clips, then bring them to the digitizing machine and capture them. I always test my workflows before commiting to a project.
