Is there any way to tell (other than just by eye) which format a digibeta has been shot in?

I have been sent a tape which looks as if it could be either 16:9 or 4:3 – the material is not obvious which is correct. There are no markings on the tape, and the company that provided it do switch between formats for different jobs, so theres no guarantee that they could say either.

I’m using a DVW-M2000P deck and wondered if there was a setting that could tell me what the material originated as?

Look for something round. If it looks like an egg, it’s anamorphic. If people look way to tall and skiny, then it’s anamorphic. Why not capture a clip and swith the anamorphic on and off to compare.

Depending on what model camera they shot the footage with, there is a character generated marker that will get recorded on the color bars (or colour bars for you PAL guys). It all depends on whether the marker is enabled in the setup menu settings on the camera. If it isn’t enabled talk to them and ask them to turn it on for you. It will make your life easier.

    thanks for the swift replies.

i usually do rely on just eyeballs…its just on this occasion the material was lots of organic amorphous shaped toys and kids playing with them. To me kids always have odd looking heads anyway, so i was looking for a technical way to decide!

i’ll look into the character flag option…thanks again

Edit the spot. Let it air. Wait for a deluge of complaining mums screaming that their Timmy or Jemima isn’t that fat and they didn’t get in to modelling just so people like you could make their beloved look awful and how they’ll never do TV again and anyway magazines pay better…

Been there? Moi? Least you’ll know….

My advice – go for the most flattering. Seriously!
