I am just in the process of auditioning a new tablet because the old wrists are starting to feel a bit mouse battered, and have nicked my wifes Intuos3 for a few days.

I can definitely see the pro’s and this tablet certainly feels much better than my ropey old graphire (which is the main reason i have never taken to using a tablet before). The scroll slider is great, as is the ability to customise the buttons for shortcuts (ctrl V was killing me!!).

I do have one question that i’m hoping is possible….can one of the scroll strips be programmed to operate the timeline scrub bar? (I don’t even know if thats the right name.)

Is there an easy way to accurately scrub through frames using just an Intuos ?

    regards

Not that I know of. I just scrub with the pen. That’s not a keystroke to scrub the timeline, unless I’m missing a shortcut somewhere.

I’m just wondering (this is a question about the pen, assuming you’re still on the stock pen)… Do you like using the buttons on the pen? I find them really hard to press without re-orienting my hand. If you do use them a lot, how exactly are you holding your pen? Do you press the buttons with your index finger or thumb?

    Thanks,

can’t really get used to the buttons myself, but my wife uses nothing but! She finds when using the pen that the nib hardly ever touches the pad surface and uses the buttons with her thumb to trigger the clicks, etc.

…and like a fool – after adding that last comment, instead of picking up the pen, i started running two fingers across the pad trying to scroll my open window. That has to be one of the best functions of the newer macbooks…now if only wacom could add it to the tablets….hmmm.

Walter, just thought this might be of interest….I have just got my wacom doing the kind of scrubbing i wanted. Basically, i set the left hand scrub strip to Zoom, and the right hand strip to scroll.

Now here’s the really interesting bit….if the cursor is placed over the time bar at the top of the timeline window, then the scroll setting will scrub the timeline. If the cursor is over the actual tracks, the scroll will cause the tracks to scroll up and down in the window.

I think this tablet requires a lot more experimenting, cos i bets theres some really fun hidden features.

    Adam,

    I’m thinking of doing likewise – 2 queries…

What size do you use? I’m thinking along the lines of an A6 wide or A5, but I need it to be portable…

Also, does the intuos 3 support ‘mouse mode’ or relative positioning? I can’t get on with tablets that don’t let you ‘stroke’ your way across screen and force you to use the whole tablet area…

    Cheers,

    Jason

Jason, in truth I have only been using it about an hour… and i think its really good. I used to have a wacom graphire and hated it – too plastic and lightweight.

This Intuos 3 is great – i am using the A5 wide which feels a good size. You can restrict the area of the tablet you want to use, although i have decided to follow the quantel practice of using the whole tablet area. I have decided to try this out to help prevent RSI, and restricting myself to tiny movements will probably result in the same aches i get from mouse nudging. It actually feels quite expressive to use use larger gestural moves….try it and see what you think.

If you can get someone to let you borrow one for a morning, that might help you decided because they ain’t cheap..but you certainly get what you pay for.

I think the A6 may be a little small – but having said that, the A5 is smaller than my 17″ MBP and so sits easily in the same bag. I use a Musto Navigator bag – an amazing number of pockets and you can squeeze a large mac laptop into its built in sleeve – but only just!

[thewanggao] “Do you press the buttons with your index finger or thumb?”

Yes I use them all the time with my index finger. Hasn’t been an issue or even something I think about.

If any of you are interested in the Wacom’s I found some online at Costco for a pretty good price.
