    Mike,

I don’t know if the Bamboo will work (you’d need to look on the Wacom site – ISTR that it will) but I’ll say this. At one point last year I was starting to think I’d need to find another career, as my arm was so painful from a combination of RSI and another injury. The Wacom allowed me to continue working and for my body to heal itself… the model I use (tha smallest wide format Intuos) is fine and, I have to say, worth every penny. Don’t think too hard about the money, because once you’ve gotten used to it you will never go back to a mouse!

[walter biscardi] “With a mouse you can single click and hold down for a second to change any file name. The Intuos 3 can’t any longer.

Odd – my mouse won’t. I have to do a ‘slow double click’ on order to rename. It’s a mighty mouse, btw.

[walter biscardi] “With a mouse you can hold down on any tool in Photoshop to bring up alternate tools. The Intuos 3 can’t any longer.

Dunno as I don’t have Photoshop installed on this machine yet!

[walter biscardi] “Also, in FCP, the single click gets “stuck” whereby I can click on a clip to make an adjustment, but then I have to click off anywhere else in the app before I can do anything else in the app.”

I’ll check on this – not experienced it yet but sometimes you can just subconciously work around problems without realising. It certainly hasn’t happened on the Quad G5 I’ve been working on, and I haven’t noticed any difference in functionality between the G5 and my MacPro… I’ll let you know.

    Walter,

How is single click not working for you? I’m running the A5 wide and it’s fine on my MacPro 2.66… Just curious to see if I can replicate it or even if I’m unaware of the problem!!

September 25, 2007 at 8:51 pm in reply to: QTs not readable on Linux system?

    Thanks both,

I think they should be able to add the .mov extension, but they seem to think not. They specifically asked for a QT mov file, so I’m assuming they know what they want… apparently this is the way they do it with other clients, so I thought it might be a export issue with FCP. I think they don’t know quite as much as they think they do -but as ever, telling the client this in a way that won’t offend is why us editors would make such good diplomats.

I’ll get them to try adding .mov and see if that helps!

    Cheers,

    Jason

September 17, 2007 at 12:11 pm in reply to: outputting HD to a Beta deck

    Axbaez,

[axbaez] “Ok here is the deal.. I used compressor and when I put the new 10bit uncompressed clip into a new sequence it squeezes the video to fit the 4:3 ratio. Is there any way (cause this is a music video) I could just keep the 16×9 format ? I dont mind the black bars at the botton and top of the video. “

If, on your output monitor, it is displaying 4:3 and everything looks squeezed vertically then that is correct. HD (putting it simply) is native 16:9. SD is ALWAYS 4:3, but may or may not be anamorphic – vertically ‘squished’ so that it plays back widescreen on a widescreen set. So your seeing it on the canvas as 16:9 and on your monitor as 4:3 would be correct. You don’t say what you’re using as a monitor, but if its a 4:3 screen you may have a 16:9 switch (most pro CRT monitors do, if they’re not too old) or if you’re using a widescreen tv you may just need to switch the aspect ratio.

Mastering to Beta SP would give you a 16:9 FHA (Full Height Anamorphic) master.

Your other option is to letterbox – but this will be letterboxed 4:3 and may be unsuitable for broadcast on many stations. Most require 16:9FHA, certainly this side of the pond (PAL land)

    HTH,

    Jason

September 14, 2007 at 8:20 am in reply to: Media Manager – should i risk trying it?

[lightning ad] “I have managed to go for 14 months on FCP without resorting to Media Manager, and having read so many complaints about it has got me nervous about using it.”

    Adam,

This really made me chuckle. I have visions of a junk cupboard that’s dark and full of spiders, and you don’t really want to go in ther but you know you have to sometime…

You’re not alone! Maybe we should start a MM support group!

Let us know how you get on, we’re right behind you (in spirit anyway)

September 5, 2007 at 11:23 am in reply to: Lower 3rd funkiness – what’s going on?

    Tom,

The strap fades L to R, going from about 80% at left to 30% extreme right. Constant top to bottom.

You’re right about the deliverables – it’s not a show stopper, but one of those things that will bug me. Nice to know the why’s and wherefores so I don’t get caught out when it does happen again!

    Tom,

It is indeed just a strap. Created in PSE, then an alpha created in PSE too (B&W image). I’ve dropped the Image Mask effect on the strap, then dropped the alpha pic in to the image well of the effect – set to use luminance. It keys beautifully – nice and clean. It’s a way of getting round not being able to export a 32 bit TGA.

Looking more closely, it is just the area of the strap (from top to bottom and across to either side) that ‘pops’. The image under the strap (it’s translucent) grows in all axes by maybe 5-10%, but seems to be ‘anchored’ at the top. The picture below the strap isn’t affected, save for the fact it moves down to accomodate the enlarged strap.

Again, this is only viewable from the Kona outputs (currently CVBS in to a TV just for checking field issues) and not via exported quicktimes. DVDs authored from said QT are also fine.

    Puzzling!!

August 29, 2007 at 10:46 pm in reply to: Do you have 4GB RAM? Are you crashing?

[Mike Parfit] “For drives we have a 500 GB Seagate System drive and 3 internal Seagate 750s in raid 0”

Long shot, but didn’t barefeats encounter problems with earlier seagate drives in a 3-way stripe? I seem to remember that one somewhere…

I understand the newer drives don’t have this problem (at least I hope so ’cause that’s what I’ve got!)

    Mike,

Must be really frustrating for you – made doubly bad by smart asses like me saying ‘I’ve never had a crash…’ – but it’s true. Worked on a G5 with 4 gigs for years and I can count crashes on one hand, and still have fingers left to type. So far, with about a week on my new MP, with 5 gigs in, nada.

Long shot but have you checked your mains? I’m trying to think of something constant that hasn’t altered (even though your system has). Are there any programs you have that you;ve ported from one mac to another? (specially if you used the migrate option when you got your new mac). I’d do a complete, clean install from scratch, load nothing but FCP, use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup and add any new software one bit at a time. Long process but it’s a bit like finding ut what food you’re allergic to…
