WACOM tablet
Posted by Spencer Schilly on September 30, 2007 at 11:38 pmhey –
I just got one of these WACOM tablets because my hand was hurting using the mouse because i am editing so much. Any advice on settings? as far as pressure for the pen or which pen nib works best with FCP. Also how to hold it? in my lap?? I’m still having some trouble with it… i hope i will get the hang of it in a day or so.
thanks –

September 30, 2007 at 11:59 pmIt takes a few days to get used to how it works. I just use it on a desk in place of a mouse.
Default settings work for me, except on my Mac Pro. been having a continuing issue with the single click not working correctly on my Mac Pro. Been trying to work with Wacom for about 6 months on this now, but they don’t have any answers.

How is single click not working for you? I’m running the A5 wide and it’s fine on my MacPro 2.66… Just curious to see if I can replicate it or even if I’m unaware of the problem!!

With a mouse you can single click and hold down for a second to change any file name. The Intuos 3 can’t any longer.
With a mouse you can hold down on any tool in Photoshop to bring up alternate tools. The Intuos 3 can’t any longer.
Also, in FCP, the single click gets “stuck” whereby I can click on a clip to make an adjustment, but then I have to click off anywhere else in the app before I can do anything else in the app.
I have three Intuos 3 tablets and they all exhibit the same behavior on the Mac Pro since about OS 10.4.9. They all work normally on our two G5’s.

“Odd – my mouse won’t. I have to do a ‘slow double click’ on order to rename. It’s a mighty mouse, btw.

“Dunno as I don’t have Photoshop installed on this machine yet!

I’ll check on this – not experienced it yet but sometimes you can just subconciously work around problems without realising. It certainly hasn’t happened on the Quad G5 I’ve been working on, and I haven’t noticed any difference in functionality between the G5 and my MacPro… I’ll let you know.

October 1, 2007 at 1:48 pmSpence I don’t know what size tablet you’ve got but on all of mine (various sizes) I much prefer to have the active area remapped small so that I can rest the edge of my hand on the tablet and use the stylus just like a pencil. Saves all that arm waving!!
I think most of wacom’s drivers allow this area remapping – maybe not the cheap range.
I grew up with the tablets back in the DOS days even before learning to use a mouse and think they are wonderful.
Persevere, all will come good I promise.

October 1, 2007 at 1:57 pmI tried all three on my my Intious 2 on the mac pro here and the photoshop and FCP things aren’t issues. Holding a click on a file doesn’t allow me to change the name. That doesn’t bother me though as I never even knew that was an option before. I either go for a slow double click or just hit return while the file is selected.
Spence,
I have mine set so the bottom button is set for double clicks and the top button is set to right click (I think thats reverse from the default) as I find I use double click more than right click. I also have it set in mouse mode so I don’t have to fly all around to get things far off. And I just keep it to the right of my keyboard like I would a mouse.

October 1, 2007 at 6:01 pmI have been having wrist problems for the last year of so and have been thinking about also switching to the Intuos but it has been a little to expensive for me. I did notice the new BAMBOO version, has anyone tried this yet? I am mainly using FCP and sometimes Photoshop & AE, thanks.

I don’t know if the Bamboo will work (you’d need to look on the Wacom site – ISTR that it will) but I’ll say this. At one point last year I was starting to think I’d need to find another career, as my arm was so painful from a combination of RSI and another injury. The Wacom allowed me to continue working and for my body to heal itself… the model I use (tha smallest wide format Intuos) is fine and, I have to say, worth every penny. Don’t think too hard about the money, because once you’ve gotten used to it you will never go back to a mouse!

I know folks who are using the inexpensive Graphire line just fine with FCP. For just replacing a mouse, any version of the WACOM tablets will work. What you get for more money is a more solid, less “plastic feel” tablet with more pressure sensitivity feel. Most folks don’t need this.
