  • I switched from Windows to Mac 3 years ago.
At first, I had similar reservations because things were so different from what I had become accustomed to. Yet, within a few weeks I found myself much more comfortable using OSX than I had ever felt using Windows. Now, I can’t stand working in Windows. I’m sure if I switched back, I’d acclimate again.

There are strengths and weaknesses in any OS.
A number of your points are valid, but many of them are personal preference and not bad design. Once you get comfortable within Apple’s structure, you may feel differently. Then, again, you may the type of person who prefers the Windows structure.

    Thank goodness for options.

Do you run anti-virus and anti-spyware software?
The pop-up issue sounds like you have spyware on your Windows side.
I don’t know if that is causing Parallels issues also (if it even can).

This assumes you are using one of the more recent versions of the apps-

    In Illustrator:
In the ALIGN panel, choose “Align to artboard”
Then click the horizontal and vertical align buttons

    In Photoshop:
You will need a layer the same size as the canvas.
Select the layer you need to align, then shift (or command/ctrl)-click the layer the size of the canvas. As long as you have the selection tool selected (the black arrow-shortcut V), you will see alignment options available at the top of the screen. Click the horizontal and vertical alignment buttons.

For the carpet, you could try precomping the solid and doing the same as I stated above.
Or, you could look at the size of the solid and the scale, then do the math and create a psd that size.

    Open your precomps.
    Choose Composition>Save frame as>File
It will add that frame of the precomp to the render queue as a psd.
Make sure to go into the render settings and change the resolution to “full.”

    Cool site.
This is a good way to keep me occupied while I render.

Your expression probably looks something like this:
    thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).transform.position[0]

    Change it to this:
    thisComp.layer(“Null 1”).transform.position[2]

    The reason:
    0=x 1=y 2=z

Make sure you have your null set as a 3D object

There is also the option of creating a page turn effect directly in Flash.
You should be able to find a good tutorial online.
Warning: You’ll have to wade through a lot of bad page turn tutorials before finding a good one.

    Assuming you are using CS3:

CS3 no longer has the arrow preset.
It is pretty easy to create some rather nice arrows using shape layers.

If you have access to an older version of AE, I don’t see any reason you couldn’t copy the arrow preset into your CS3 preset folder.
