I just returned a Tascam DR-100. The preamps are way too noisy. From what I hear, the Zoom H4n is better, but I haven’t used it myself. I ended up getting a JuicedLink DT454 and running the output directly to the camera. Nice clean preamps; sounds great! Great customer support as well.

I have one of the Cool Lights CDM instruments (I believe it is the same housing/lens as their tungsten 650) and I have been very happy with it. Quality of the housing is not up to Arri level; but adequate. I would buy it again. As others have mentioned, customer service from Cool Lights is excellent.

I own both Flolight and Coolights products. Coolights are a bit higher quality and the customer service is way higher in quality!

Flip the whole tripod over (on the carpet); there should be three little set-screws that keep the head from twisting. Once those are loosened, you can unscrew the head from the tripod.

Or… that scan could be taken into After Effects and one could accomplish the same effect with 3D layers, lights, etc…

After my experience the Tascam DR-100, I’m surprised that good results can be achieved with the $300 Zoom H4n. Of course, the Tascam was only $290. I guess 10 bucks makes all the difference! I ended up getting a JuicedLink DT454 ($400), which is a box with XLR inputs and active preamps. It has nice clean gain and I can feed the audio directly to my Panny GH2 for recording. It looks like it is going to work out well. Thanks for the feedback!

Are you running your mic into an amp/mixer of some kind before you go out to the Zoom H4n. Just curious what you are using…
I’ve been trying to work up an audio system for my Panny GH2. I tried the Tascam DR-100, but found that the preamps are way too noisy to be any good. I’m using a Sony ECM-672 shotgun.

[Ryan Orr] “I was lead to believe that the GH2 has a clean (no graphics), uncompressed 1080p signal coming out of the HDMI, straight from the sensor. So, if that is true, I’m sure you could hook up an external recorder with an HDMI option to the GH2, and record super high quality video from it.
This has been a plan of mine for sometime now. Buy a GH2, get a FlashNano, and have higher quality video…

Technically, it’s not a DSLR, but the Panny GH2 will record for as long as your memory card will allow. I did a 93 minute recording before my 16GB card was used up.
