I use a SmallHD DP6 with my Panasonic GH2 and I always shoot with both screens. The GH2 LCD show a histogram, so I can check my exposure there and the DP6 has the size and resolution to maintain critical focus. The GH2 actually sends the on-screen info (including histogram) over the HDMI output until I hit record, at which point I only see the image on the DP6. FWIW, I really like my DP6!

I ask because I was having similar problems on my older Mac Pro 1,1. I’ve only got four cores and my machine won’t boot into 64 bit mode. It sounds like a faster machine doesn’t necessarily solve the problems.

While it is true that DSLR’s don’t autofocus well in video mode that doesn’t mean you can’t use them with a steadycam. Did this guy actually talk you out of renting one? The higher-end rigs will use a remote follow focus with a dedicated puller. What most lower-budget users do is use a wide lens and keep their subject beyond the infinity focus point.

[Tom Daigon] “Im running CS 5.5 with an early 2008 dual quad core stocked with 8 gigs of ram. The system is running like butter. This only varies with the codec of the clips I use in PrP 5.5. Canon 5DM2 clips slow the system down a bit due to the highly compressed h.264 files. I intend to boost the ram to 24 gigs to aid the MPE engines functioning.”

You might have better luck trying to blur the background. Some serious moire going on there. In the future try opening up the aperture more to blur the background. In bright daylight you’ll need an ND filter to accomplish this.

That’s just the thing; the MacPro 1,1 won’t run in 64 bit mode.

Thanks, Walter. That’s just what I needed; some real world experience. I won’t spend any more time trying to get Premiere to work with the Kona on this machine. It’ll be just FCP7 for now.
