Premier Pro audio drop outs and choppy playback using the KONA
I have a Kona 3 board and decided to try out PPro CS5.5, I am also part of the large group of editors who are contemplating switching to either Avid or Premiere.
I installed all the newest AJA required drivers and restarted my computer. Once in Premiere, I began playing the timeline and immediately began getting audio drop outs during playback, so I experimented a little.
After much experimenting, I went into my Mac system preferences and set the audio out to “Headphones (Headphone port)” out.
I Went back to PPro CS 5.5 (using the AJA settings) and played the timeline and no more audio drops outs! Not sure why this is, but I do agree with everyone that the AJA drivers are buggy and not as good as the ones for FCP7.
For example, when I scrub the timeline not using the KONA 3, it scrubs smoothly and the timeline is very snappy and responsive. When I use the KONA 3 board, it seems to slow down the timeline, and when I scrub the timeline it just skips to frames and does not give me smooth playback. This is problematic when trying to do fine cuts.
I love AJA products and hope that they will continue to perfect the drivers for Premiere. As for right now I will continue to work in FCP7 and will await for additional drivers for PPro CS5.5.
