I’m using 1080 in a 720 timeline so that I can use the extra resolution to simulate focal length changes in the edit. Good news! I set the ioXT output to 1080Psf 23.98 and it works beautifully in FCPX. I was telling it to upconvert before and it looked lousy, but straight up 1080 = sweetness! Thanks for your input while I got this sorted.

OK you seem to have missed the part 720p 23.98 is a non standard video signal and needs the padding to playback and that FCPX does not offer that option as it did in FCP7. The stuttering playback is from being on an underpowered system (RAM usually) that cannot process the conversion in real time.The Cross conversion to 1080 23.98 should not look bad unless you have your video set better performance instead of High quality.”
Hi Gary,
I thought that by setting the output to 720p 59.94, it was adding the padding and would play out (which it seems to do, just not smoothly). I don’t think my system is straining. It was the fastest Macbook Pro I could get in early 2011 (2.3GHz i7 w/16 GB of RAM, SSD). When I play back, CPU is at about 25% and there is plenty of free RAM.
I don’t know why, but the cross conversion looks pretty crappy. I am using “native” 1080p avchd media in a 720p timeline. I wonder if it would do better if I transcoded to ProRes.

Many monitors, even broadcast monitors, do not support true 23.98 playback. The signal needs to be converted to 59.94 or 29.97 to show up which is why all the AJA products perform a realtime 23.98 to 29.97 / 59.94 conversion on output.”
That’s exactly right, Walter. It doesn’t support 23.98 directly. I had no problem outputting 59.94 to this monitor from 23.98 sequences with FCP legacy and an AJA LHe for several years. I just wish I could figure out what’s going wrong now!

Output from After Effects CS6 via the ioXT is great! Set to 720p 59.94 in order to play out a 720p 23.98 comp. Much better performance than the Digital Cinema Desktop. My RAM previews actually play back in realtime now.

I forgot about the Window > AV/output setting. So, I’m getting video out again, but when I set to convert from 720p 23.98 to 1080psf 23.98, it looks lousy (aliasing) but plays back smoothly. If I try to output 720p 23.98 directly, my Panasonic BT-lh1700w monitor says “unsupported signal”. If I set it to 720p 59.94, the picture looks good but the playback stutters. I’m back where I started 12 hours ago and I’m not sure I’ve learned anything!

I did a test capture that was over 7 hours long, once. That’s what you need to do; test it before the actual shoot.

[James Ewart] “Out of interest what is the advantage of editing native AVCHD instead of optimising/transcoding to Pro Res? re there no issues with editing natively such a compressed format as AVCHD (which I also use and really like)?”
The advantages are; smaller file size, no transcoding time. If you are editing with multiple video layers and doing heavy image tweaking then you will probably get better performance using optimized footage.
