It was filmed off of a TV, 17 different TVs actually.

That pixelated analogue look is really hard to replicate. But the Bad TV presets by RowByte are pretty awesome.

You would track him with Mocha or whatever tracker you prefer, then use the tracking data to create nulls. ConnnectLayers connect lines between the nulls and will even fill in the triangles with the color of your choice, or even a color map. Plexus can do this for the most part, but it takes some finesse to set it up right.

Rendering to AME is definitely a good route. I do animation, so everything I render out of AE is typically an image sequence, then I place that in Premiere where I mix the sound together with any watermarks and stuff. Once it’s all setup, then I export it out of Premiere using the same codec and compression settings I would in AME.

In your case, it sounds like you’ve just set your bit rate too low. If I’m rendering 1080p, I usually go with H264 at 10 or 15mbps depending on what I’m rendering. If there are textures, gradients, etc, I go with 15. It’s not a magic number, and you should definitely experiment with different data rates to get the best render for your needs, but that’s what I typically start with.

I’d go with Dave’s suggestion unless you plan to do a lot of tracking, more than needed to apply just the mosaic effect (heavily tweaked of course). You’ll have to track things to get the mosaic effect onto your actor’s face as well as the surface of the buildings you want to “digitize”. You might look into Row Byte’s TV distortion effects as well https://www.rowbyte.com/products/tv-distortion-bundle/ You can find individual copies of these effects on aescripts.com.

If you truly indeed want to use Plexus, assuming you already own the $200 plugin, you’ll need to track individual points on your actor’s face (maybe wait for the new version of AE to drop, which has this built into it). You could also try Motion Botiques ConnectLayers https://aescripts.com/connect-layers/ which also draws lines from 3d track points, and costs a fraction of what Plexus costs (it’s actually a suggested $40 price).

    Good luck!

I’ll second to that, compressing in AE is a bad idea, but it’s not to say it can’t be done (just not done very well).

Having said that, let’s figure out what exactly you’re doing. What settings are you using in the Render module to render your MTS file? I have a camera that spits out similar files and have never had a problem rendering them.

  • Is it a closed path? If not, that’s probably why the Add, Subtract options are missing.

April 14, 2015 at 2:36 pm in reply to: Element 3D- Extrude Multiple Text layers

Ah, yeah, you should have indicated which version of Element you were using. Also, this kind of thing would take 3 days, tops, to sort out with support from Video Copilot if you were to email them. info@videocopilot.net

In V2 of Element, you can arrange the text layers within groups in the UI itself. They initially start out overlapping, but there are X,Y,Z handles to move the models around before exiting the new interface. It’s pretty awesome.

You can have multiple extrusions in one group. You just tell each extrusion which custom text layer to extrude from. You don’t have to put each text extrusion into it’s own group. If you want to animate each one individually, you can assign each one to an Auxiliary group. You don’t get multi-object control with Auxiliary group animation, but you can rotate the whole word, position, scale it, etc.

  • NitroMan is the shiznit. I’ll have to check that one out. I’m glad it worked. Getting those keyframes to bake can be a pain in the butt sometimes, I agree.
