Yea…good point, I’m just making sure that my understanding is correct. As my Grandpa always said, there’s more than one way to skin a cat! 🙂

    Hey Adolfo,

Just curious on your suggestion. If you had the mask on the layer and precomposed with *leave attributes in current comp* wouldn’t that accomplish the same thing?

August 18, 2009 at 5:23 pm in reply to: subclip doesn’t have handles?

    Hey Thanks Nick and David!

This is exactly the answer I was looking for. A bit strange as to how it changes the subclips back into normal clips…I’m still dumfounded by a few things in FCP…some of it is nicer but other things are just really strange and unnecessary.

One good thing about removing subclip bounds is that the new full clip keeps in and out points that reference the original subclip. I liked that.

One thing that I don’t understand when it comes to final cut is when I double click a clip in the timeline…it opens a new instance of that clip. What are the benefits of this? Why not reference original footage? Just trying to understand it better.

Thanks again for your help guys!

Animation codec is pretty heavy, depending on your hardware…you may not be able to play back anim codec real time. I wouldn’t trust playing back the anim codec on your desktop as a reliable determination of quality render from AFX.

Take that video into a NLE and play it back…import into AVID, and it will auto transcode to AVID codec, or FCP and Premier will render it to native codec playback.

It’s a cheap camera. I just lived with the problem (it was for a family member) I’ll never use that camera again…never could figure it out. Good luck…sorry I can’t be of more help.

August 1, 2009 at 3:08 pm in reply to: Hourly rate for Post Production (AE) work?

Good comments Scott. I guess we’re all different in our expectations. My charges are based on freelance. I work full time so my *free time* to do freelance is limited. That’s why I feel justified in charging 125/hr. I have clients pay it all the time. I’d never work freelance for 300/day. That’s not nearly enough to pay for your time/facility/healthcare/equipment/and about 30 other things I’m not thinking of.

I guess back to the initial question, figure out that you cost based on a 10 hour workday and figure out your day rate. Account for every expense you have running your own business.

    Just my 2 cents…which took me 5 minutes to write…so 125/60 x 5 = 🙂

    Take care guys.

look at your info pallete…it gives you good information on playback.

    1) are you doing a RAM preview?
    2) does your resolution match your zoom? – 100% @ full 50% @ half…etc.

I agree with Michael…the exposure of the piece elicits more $…as well as the complexity.

Your skills are on par with what I would term as an *advanced* after effects artist. I’m in the midwest as well, my skills are somewhat advanced and I charge 125/hr when I can. Obviously I can’t all the time, but that’s where I usually start. Charge for rendering time also…helps pay for those machines which cost so much!

Nice job on the video…stay away from the animation presets! But really nice ideas and flow from segment to segment…cool.

What a great post. I’ve only been using FCP for a couple months now. And the first time this happened, I thought I was doing something wrong…because I was certain that a tool with SUCH professional features would completely miss the boat on this.

I was an AVID editor for about 10 years and when I first experienced FCP, I was excited. It offers so much more flexibility than the AVID timeline…and seems like I could get to be as fast at cutting with it.

But there are a few small things like this that will keep FCP from destroying it’s competitors until it gets fixed.

It’s like my complaint with AVID that you can’t use blending modes with layers (at least not with my version of MediaComposer). I guess they (software) all have their frustrating parts!

What a good discussion, hopefully someone is listening!
