Let me start by saying that I spent the last 8 hours trying to figure this out and burnt several discs as tests!

(I’ll attach links to pictures at bottom)

Has nothing to do with connection – RCA, HDMI, Component…recreated issue with all 3.

Has nothing to do with player – created issue with multiple players.

The issue is with 16×9 vs 4×3 mixed with a background.

First thing I did was put same overlay’s over black. Looked perfect. No problems.

Second thing I did was put them over a still image OR motion menu (transcoded MPEG2) – problem on both.

Third thing I found was that problem went away when I changed menu (in encore) to native 4×3 OR changed DVD player to push out 16×9 image.

Final thing I did was to put all 3 overlay assignments in my photoshop file – =1, =2. and =3. And…get this – 1 and 2 had the problem…but 3 did not.

So my result was to use ALL =3 and use the same color I’ve been using all along…WORKS FINE on DVD player set to 4×3 LB or 16×9.

This HAS to be a corrupt install or something…I can’t imagine this is normal…I’m using CS4.

The overlay in the following image is the 3 circles together…on the left side of the screen, about middle.

Again, my solution was to change all overlays to =3 and problem is gone.

Thought I’d update you, although at this point I don’t need any additional help…disc is on it’s way to the client!

Thanks so much Alex, this did work for me. I didn’t set up the loop, because after each time, I manually changed the name. I just used automator to do the create new seq…copy-paste.

I had butler on my machine, but couldn’t get it to work for me…I only played with it for a couple weeks…maybe I should give it another try.

I was overcomplicating it…trying to think of how to isolate the content I wanted inside the sequence…then duplicating that sequence…when your idea of just copying and pasting out what I wanted was the cleanest way.

OK…as I did some further testing and was reading posts online. I think I figured this out. I have a better question to ask. And I realized that I know MUCH less about this than I thought I did. I’ve only been working in HD since I came from an SD AVID media composer to Final Cut…about 6 months ago.

My source footage is HDV – upper field first.

As I was looking through episode…there is a setting – HD to SD DVD…in that setting, there is a filter to reverse the field order (UFF to BFF) that is applied.

So I setup compressor to use the episode plug-in. And compressed…the results: (screengrab from VLC)

(I included the last file as a compressor job where I changed field dominance to Upper comparable to the Episode)

Now, I know I’m looking at interlaced footage on computer…and there are SEVERAL other factors. But I think this has to do with interlacing. The episode version looks much better. Edges are cleaner and it IS interlaced (and darker for some reason…)

So my new question…I thought SD-DVD could contain either field order, UFF or BFF as long as the MPEG2 file had the correct header for the DVD player to read…

I started with the apple compressor settings. When that wasn’t working…I started tweaking. I’ve done CBR, VBR…I’ve probably done 15 different tests…and they all aren’t as clear as what I’m pushing out of Sorenson or Episode.

I have a fair knowledge…I’ve been authoring/encoding for about 5-6 years, so I’m not a noob to this. I’ve only been using Compressor for the last couple months and can’t figure out what’s going on.

I’ll add that to my feature request…that is brutal, I can’t believe that you can’t turn off preview on source clips…you can do it in the timeline.

Hey Everyone,

I know there is a 5D forum now, but I said I’d post my results…so here it is:

We ended up shooting and editing with the P2 camera we had…because the first day we were there, MY MACBOOK PRO DIED!!! So I wasn’t confident introducing a workflow using a laptop that wasn’t optimized for that workflow.

BUT, we did shoot with the 5D and did use some of the footage.

The KEY IMHO is to record a clip for clip on your audio device and camera. We were using a zoom recorder…which allows you to customize the name, but it’s too clumsy. So when you import your CF card and SD card you have a matching clip for clip audio and video.

I had setup an output module in Compressor to convert the frame rate to 29.97 and ProRes LT. That seems to work well…it’s funny, cause it feels alot like digitizing footage from tape…the time you have to wait to be able to edit!

We used a cheap monitor for focus…I think you need a nicer one something like the Marshall LCD70XP which I have yet to test, but the promo video looks impressive.

The mounting rig we used was a red rock micro…it wasn’t configured right, and we didn’t have much time to play with it…so I can’t say whether it was good or bad.

The focusing is tough to do on the fly…it’s definitely not an ENG camera…all exposure controls are on the back of the camera..which is a huge departure from having a ring on the lens.

We brought a few lenses and I love the look of that camera. I was really impressed. I think this has some legs…if they can get the workflow cleaner and reduce the need to go to the h264 as an interim…this camera will change the game.

My solution right now is to open the source flie in QT7…open properties…delete audio track, then relink in FCP. This does what I need, but it just seems like a lot of work just to turn off monitoring of the audio on a clip! 🙂
