Hi,
Winstons capture now reason sounds similar to when it happens to me. About 50% of the time when i use the powerbook at work to capture now from a dv deck for more than about 5 mins when I hit escape to stop the capture i get the beach ball and have to hard reset.
When you start up again a -av file will be in the capture folder which has filled the entire remainder of the hard drive and does not work. Just have to trash it and start again. It’s a pain when we’re doing live studio interviews though….

Hi steve,
Been trying to track you down. You mentioned in another thread that you may knopw something about upcoming MBP updates/revisions.
Do you know something about this or when the next update will be coming? I’m about to buy one, but you have the down low on when to expect the new one, and what will be changing i’d love to know, even if it is just speculation.
Thanks Steve

Hi there,
I had a similar problem a while back. Was making some graphics for a local kids show and when my exports were brought back into FCP there was no way to preserve the transparency.
I know I was exporting correctly, and the kids were using FCP 3 so I don’t know if there are alpha issues with that release but we could not get FCP to show or recognise the alpha channel. Later versions of FCP worked perfectly, and it just blew my mind trying to figuire out why this was happening. Still don’t know to today.
Don’t know what my point was. mmm sorry about this.

Hi all,
Hey Steve – you know something I don’t
Actually forget that – most people know lots I don’t…
Do you have any idea when it’s coming out? I know it’s like predicting rain, but I was going to buy my MBP 15 in the next week or so, but if you have some goss on impending new models i’d appreciate hearing it so I can hold off.
Thanks steve.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I think smoething like that and then just keying the output in the switcher is looking like my best bet.
Thanks for your time. Iappreciate it a lot.

It’s sounding pretty much as I thought.
I didn’t realise that’s how the trucks do it. It’s given me something to think about though.
To get by we’ve just been outputting full screen FCP comps over green and chromaing it, but it’s obviously far from perfect. The switchers we’re using don’t even have clip stores unfortunately, so I don’t think even that workflow would work.
All of which points out to me that I’m probably trying to do something far more difficult and complicated than the rest of our equipment/crew skill levels/output quality will allow.
I appreciate all your feedback. Thanks again.

Yeah but who wants or needs the hassel and expense of buying professional equipment? What can’t it all be easy and simple on my powerbook?
But seriously, I was looking at that software product the other day – the website didn’t seem to give very clear guidance on it’s specs though.
Say I’m running a simple 2 or 3 cam shoot using firewire handycams. Can that program handle all 3 feeds live? If so how do I get them into the computer – firewire hub? Haven’t tried but i’d imagine even the new macbook pro i’m about to get would struggle swallowing multiple DV streams coming in.
Any idea on this guys?
Thanks.

May 17, 2006 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Live broadcast graphics off a MacBook Pro – possible?Hi Guys,
Thanks for the responses.
I am basically looking for an Inscriber on a laptop type solution. I agree that Livetype is not the best solution for what I am looking for, but I can see where he was coming from in suggesting that and I am greatful for all suggestions.
I guess my dream is of this tiny little breakout box. It connects to your firewire port, or directly to a pci card. The box has a Key and Fill output for connecting to a broadcast switcher. Inside the ‘puter is a beautifully simple interface, like an iTunes, where you can set up playlists of your pre-rendered quicktimes with alpha channels, and they play out live to air at the press of a button. And it all costs on $59.95.
That’s not too much to ask is it? Are you sure none of you know where to find this product? 😉
Thanks heaps for your time guys.

How I do love a forum that begins on debate over high (or lesser high) tech machinery and quickly descends into grammatical syntax.
Nothing like the cow for a laugh.
