  • Quicktime files with “-av” extensions?

Posted by Robinson on June 1, 2006 at 7:43 pm

    hi,

I was just doing a random check of some quicktime files from the drive by trying to play them to see if they are not corrupt and I encountered some files with a -av extension written next to the file name which wouldnt play back. So for ex: there is a file named: tape 1.1, which plays fine and then the next file named: tape 1.2-av, dosent play. It gives an error message ‘Quicktime cannot open this file. It is a file that quicktime dosent understand (-2048).’ Since I am having trouble launching FCP today, I am not sure if these files play fine in the project. As far as I know, they do.

But I just wanted to know where the (-av )extension comes from ( I did not digitise any of this footage)and if its a quicktime compatibilty issue.

Thanks in advance for any help.

i usually get those when there is an “error” in capturing…sometimes they work fine in FCP/QT, sometimes they are messed up and won’t open.

Those are almost always due o some type of capture problem, and I have never had any luck with them. Sometimes they say they’re 20 Gigs, other times they’re only 345k, but I trash them all and recapture. Not worth the risk IMHO.

this happens if you have a file size limit set in capture now. long captures get divided up into multiple files, that are interdependent in order to play. the first file in the series will play and reference the others.

I’ve also noticed that the only time this occures to me, is when I try and use Capture Now for anything longer than 5 min.

    Hi,

Winstons capture now reason sounds similar to when it happens to me. About 50% of the time when i use the powerbook at work to capture now from a dv deck for more than about 5 mins when I hit escape to stop the capture i get the beach ball and have to hard reset.

When you start up again a -av file will be in the capture folder which has filled the entire remainder of the hard drive and does not work. Just have to trash it and start again. It’s a pain when we’re doing live studio interviews though….

I had your particular issue. It turned out I had corrupt preferences files. FCP 5 rescure cleaned it up.
