Live Switching on an Apple Laptop.
I work aat an video company and we shoot alot of two shot things such as plays,graduation,etc….We are trying to figure out if there is a way to switch from two cameras “on the fly”. If you know any software that would work on a Mac along with maybe some hardware to do this. It prolly isn’t even possible but if you know a way let me know.

Yeah but who wants or needs the hassel and expense of buying professional equipment? What can’t it all be easy and simple on my powerbook?
But seriously, I was looking at that software product the other day – the website didn’t seem to give very clear guidance on it’s specs though.
Say I’m running a simple 2 or 3 cam shoot using firewire handycams. Can that program handle all 3 feeds live? If so how do I get them into the computer – firewire hub? Haven’t tried but i’d imagine even the new macbook pro i’m about to get would struggle swallowing multiple DV streams coming in.
Any idea on this guys?

Get Newtek’s tricaster.

for about $1300 you can get the Edirol switcher and a ADVC-110 – you’ll be using S-Video and then converting on the fly the switcher output to DV, which you can then record to a laptop no problem.
You could probably get a cheaper vertical interval 4 input switcher.
Or rent something like an MX-50 or equivalent for $250/day from Bexel or your local rental house
The Tricaster is an all in one solution which works pretty well, but costs $5000
