So, get this. 10 months later, I’m now using R17, and I’m using two brand new machines (two identical Alienware 15 R2), and working on a completely different project with zero overlap. I have the other machine set up for team render. When I push a project, both machines chug away at it for about a minute, then the second machine just silently stops working on it. Flips to idle. Exactly like my original screenshots, above.

I’m starting to think that it’s related to GI. I happen to be using it again on this project. It’s almost as if GI pre-passes on the slave machine(s) doesn’t reset some sort of ping/timeout counter, and if it doesn’t finish those pre-passes in a minute or so, then it disengages.

  • Here’s something that makes the problem a bit better: when you find the dolly stuck, spin yourself around 180 and dolly backwards instead. Not only does that get you ‘forward’ a little, but it seems to unjar the dolly too. So when you flip back around, you can continue forward.

  • And a shot of the baseboards I mentioned:

This may be a scale issue. I’m working in Inches, and a lot of these errors occur in the smaller/thin objects. Also, the pattern is a giveaway. Will investigate further.

Hobbyist level. Used C4D since R14. Now on R16.

  • Something else worth mentioning: in lower light, the issue is accentuated. Also, I get the sense the pattern moves from render-to-render.

I’ve scoured the Help, reviewed all settings, and watched a few vids. But have been unable to get rid of this issue in my scene (lit by IR). The record density in the example above was already using the High preset. I also didn’t realize until recently that it’s not just low light renders – it also affects medium light areas. It’s just blotchy/burned all over.

It’s quite a dilemma – I do like QMC as an alternative to IR, but then I get the weird random light/leaking. I’ll post a pic of that as well, if this thread picks up.

  • I’m runnin’ R16. I do sometimes let go of the dolly, and yea, sometimes it will unlock. But more than half the time it just re-engages as a very slow dolly rate. Panning is worse tho. I use Alt-Middle/Button – but it’s the same even if I use the viewport button.

Probably a few laughs reading this.

The problem was the viewport filters; had splines disabled.
