Hi Chris,

If you look at the one example of $168 to archive 15 hours of DVCPROHD and you find that outrageous, you have not looked at tape cost. DVCPRO HD tape will cost you $50 an hour.

But frankly while we mention it in the white pape that is hanging on the HVX200 resources page, it by far is my least favorite. My most favorite at this point in time is DLT/LTV tape storage solutions, data Storage tape. The cheaper they are the slower, but you can get a Dell for about $2250 and a about $50 for 200gigs. This will give you slightly faster than real time on HD and about 2X on DVCPRO50. The most expensive one is the Quantum and is truly a favorite as it alos is MXF aware, which means it saves the MXF data up front so it is searchable and you can go to a specific time code on that DLT and just ingest that clip. This one has a pricier beginning around the $10,000 mark, but the individual data cost is comparable with the Dell system. Me, I could justify this many times over with the time savings of not having to reload the entire tape to use just a couple of clips. But don’t let my words persuade you here, look at data storage for the IT industry, they have losts of solutions, and frankly if the IT industry has been supporting businesses for years with solutions, let’s take advantage of that. Still the QUantum has been designed byt a Data company for the video industry.

There are some future products that also look intriguing, like the Holographic Blue Laser. This should be out this year, I thought last year but no. Looks strong for this year. InPhase Technologies would be a place to look for this one.

Then this summer there is the Blue-ray, which on a dual layer could get you about 50GB. So you just have to think about how much and the overall scheme of your archive. I mean you really want to think about how am I going to keep this ogranized. People think differently but for me I would look at how I have organized my computer for a lead on how to organize my video library, as I can find virtually anything fairly quickly on my computer.

So think about it, solutions are there. Investigate, storing data is much cheaper than storing tape, at least on a DVCPRO HD level.

Use the Option Key with the Delete Key. 😉 On the last file you may have one left over and you will have to do it the hard way, but try putting them all in the rash and doing an Option Delete.

This can be done in either of the HD modes or DVCPRO50.

I think the MACBookPro is not compatible with FCP just yet, and the adapter that will make the PCIExpress compatible with the PCMCIA card is not yet available so you should on a wait and see there, but a current Powerbook would work. You do need FCP5.04 and at least 1.4GHz processor.

I would like to rent it before I buy it.

I think there may be a couple to start, take a look at Birns and Sawyer, Able Cine Tech, EVS and Moviola.

Depends on the dealer and their list. As Shane pointed out their extra camera is for sale, looks to be a pretty good deal.

Or if you bought an HVX200, then the driver is on the CD that was included in the camera box.

No, the naming convention is such that you could have 40 cameras out on the street for a year and ingest all of the footage into a server and none would have a repeat file name.

It is the randomness of it that is the plan. You can set up a user clip name thing via the SD card that is beyond the Universal clip name, but the odd number/letter combo is just for the fact that you can immmediately ingest and not worry about duplicate file names.

I had forgotten where you got and and I do concur, they are wonderful, if I had remembered, I would not have even put the alternate method in my reply. They are Customer First!

What is the projection on availability on the 16Gig cards???

Realistically it will be in the fall, maybe late fall. As you can see by the price drop some things have just changed on the availability of the 2GB SD card. We need to see steady delivery of 4 GB SD cards to see the light at the end of that tunnel.

This may mean that there is something that the PCMCIA driver needs to see is not there, so unfortunately this is very hypothetical.

Make a folder, call it Whatever, Card One, Drag the contents folder into the Newly created folder.

Only if you are sure that you will never take it to a PC platform.

Delete the files by doing an Option Delete, including the last little txt file.

Good luck, as I said, I am not sure the PCMCIA exe that comes with the camera will load without 5.04. So if it doesn’t don’t be surprised.
