Michael,
I’ve seen this problem before. The solution which worked for me, is to create a new sequence matching the settings of your other sequence, copy the elements you need to insert and paste them into the new sequence. Use the new sequence to do the insert edit. FCP can be wonky at times. I find a similar problem occurs when you change a sequence from a 2 track stereo to a 4 track stereo. FCP just doesn’t want to update the info correctly, so a new sequence seems to do the trick.

Rob,
I work at Nat Geo as an editor cutting on FCP. They shoot most of their programming on DVCProHD so you can edit in DVCProHD and not have to worry about the autoconform issues. Hold off on the ProRes422 workflow because I don’t know if the client has come to a decision on its acceptability. If you want me to put you in touch with some here who can answer your questions directly, contact me offline.

David,
I’ve run into this before as well, but only when working with text on top of video. I was using Photoshop TIFF files with text playing on top of video as part of a credit bed sequence. To get around this problem, I created a new Sequence just for the credit bed that and set the Video Processing to Always Render in RGB. I then exported that as a 10-bit Quicktime which I then layed into my original Sequence.
Hope that helps,
Jamie

Hardware, Hardware, Hardware
I’ve got the Nattress converters and love ’em and use ’em on short 5 minute stories, but for 26 hours of finished programming you definitely should do a hardware conversion.
As recommended, use an Alchemist or a Teranex anything less and you’ll have issues. Also check with clients of the post house who does the conversion to make sure they are satisfied with their results. Good hardware requires a good operator who knows how to do the settings.

David,
Thank you for your work on your XML analyzer tool. I read your Readme file and decided I couldn’t use your program at this time. All my shows are drop-frame and I rely on the Master Comments fields to input data such as shot ownership, production number, and other information my AP is required to put in the annotated EDL. Please conitnue your work on your XML analyzer, it sounds like a powerful tool and I look forward to putting it through its paces.
Cheers,

I have been looking for something similar, but to use the XML information to generate annotated EDLs otherwise known as Shot Sheets. I just found out last night that my assistant editor knows XML and he is trying to tackle this very problem of taking FCP’s XML data and translating it to an Excel spreadsheet.
I also sat in on a meeting yesterday regarding the use of PilotWare in our productions. It is my understanding that PilotWare uses EDLs to pass information back and forth with AVID, but uses XML to pass information back and forth with FCP. PilotWare is designed to track all the assets used in a particular production including stock footage and release information. It is also supposed to greatly help in the creation of annotated EDLs and music cue sheets. I have not seen it used, but hope to soon as our production/post-production division will be implementing it soon. It may be overkill for what your looking for, but check them out at pilotware.com
On the XML note, if my E2 comes up with an XML to Excel scripting program, I will be sure to post the results here on the Cow.

Graeme told me to use the G Film Converter instead of the Add Pulldown plug-in. Problem solved.

September 24, 2007 at 2:28 pm in reply to: sort bin after timecode in sequence??? or FXscript maby?Andreas,
I’ve been trying to find this gold laying goose for over three years and have yet to stumble across it. I cut a weekly show that pulls from multiple sources and we are required to make an annotated EDL or shotsheet for every episode. I enter reel numbers and barcodes (where appropriate) in the reel field and use the master comments fields to enter show name (if coming from a finished program) and shot ownership. Right now my AP has to take the EDL and the batch list of my sequence to put together the shot sheet.
So if there are any XML gurus out there who are looking to make some money… create an XML script that maps timeline information to an Excel spreadsheet would give you total props and many an AP would thank you.
