Cleanest Workflow from NTSC to PAL
Posted by Christopher Kinsman on November 29, 2007 at 12:31 amHi Users, I appreciate all your input on this upcoming project.
26 1 hour episodes on Beta SP NTSC 4CH Audio. Need to import into FCP, Retime blacks/remove commercials and deliver onto Digi Beta 4CH Audio in PAl Format. Where does the PAL conversion come into play, (digitizing/before cutting/before output/on output?) what program(s) can accomplish this with least compression/degradation (FCP/Compressor/AE?) November 29, 2007 at 2:29 amBoy, with this much material I would consider having the shows converted realtime tape to tape and then upload the new PAL tape, edit and output Pal. Having Nattress convert 26 hours of footage would take eons and you will get better results realtime with an outboard converter box. Find a service provider that has one and see what that would cost.

November 29, 2007 at 2:29 pmNattress is very good for a software converter but if you can afford it a hardware conversion is going to look better

November 29, 2007 at 4:35 pmThere are still some very bad hardware converters out there that were not really even good enough for VHS. And then there are good ones, like the Alchemist. The price differential is huge.

November 29, 2007 at 4:41 pmTotally agreed. Some ‘hardware’ converters are composite only and your nice clean video comes out looking like old bad tv.

I’ve got the Nattress converters and love ’em and use ’em on short 5 minute stories, but for 26 hours of finished programming you definitely should do a hardware conversion.
As recommended, use an Alchemist or a Teranex anything less and you’ll have issues. Also check with clients of the post house who does the conversion to make sure they are satisfied with their results. Good hardware requires a good operator who knows how to do the settings.
Cheers,
Jamie
