Thanks for your answer Michael. Is the render likely to get slower as it progresses too? In other words does the nearestMarker function take longer the more markers there are before the current time?

I guess one solution is to break up the comp onto smaller chunks

Hi Dan. Thanks for looking at this for me.

The rest of the expression was very simple, just using the prevMarkerIndex and prevMarkerTime and nextMarkerTime variables to update a source text property on a text layer. The marker layer was an audio layer that had a lot of markers on (over 1,000).

The comp is about 6.5mins long at 30fps, so it’s a fairly hefty piece, but still took 17 hours to render on a new mac pro with 12gb of RAM?! Considering there were no more complicated stuff than I’ve already explained I’m pretty flumaxed.

Hi Mike, thanks for your help.

Forgive me if I sound a little stupid asking this, but where in System Preferences should I be looking to change from Firewire to USB device?

    Thanks,
    Jamie

  • Thanks for your reply Will.

I’m trying to get my head round it all (without much success).

I was under the impression that under the Camera Settings in After Effects I could replicate pretty much any Camera by changing the Film Size and Focal Length. Is that not the case? It also looks like I can tell the Film Size be measured horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

In other words, if I can find out the Film Size and Focal Length in any digital camera then I can replicate it in After Effects. Or am I just being a bit stupid.

Oh and I don’t really need to replicate a DOF as I’m not planning on having any focal blur in what I’m doing.

    Thanks,
    Jamie

    Hi Karlis.

Do you want your shipment lines to be stuck to your map? As if they are being drawn onto the map? If so then it sounds like you want to first create a 2D composition using 3D stroke to animate the shipment lines on the map. Then take this composition in to another comp and have it as a 3D layer with your camera movement.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Dave.

I’m using square pixels. I’m pretty sure that the pixel aspect ratio wont make a difference though.

    Thanks Michael.

I think I should have said that due to other requirements of the project, I really need to solve this in After Effects.

Once again Dan you come up with the goods! Massive thanks! It seems pretty obvious now, hehe.

I’ve managed to adapt that into my stuff and it works fine. Just so you know, the next marker stuff is for some other things (like doing an easeOut from the prev marker to the next).

Thanks again Dan, really appreciated your help

Okay I’m in danger of making a habit of solving my own problems now…

…It appears that what was causing the problem is that in 3D stroke v2.0.3 it’s okay to apply to an empty Shape Layer. However, in v2.5.0 you need to have a ‘filled-in’ Shape Layer.
