hello. I do not use a switcher but have a firewire patchbay and I have not run into any issues as of yet. I even have a 15 foot cable running to my computer and then a shorter cable between the IO and the Patchbay. It is made by Ocean Matrix and I use it for firewire drives and my scanner. I wish they would make one for Firewire 800 but I guess that format is on its way out?

I have just recently incorporated and now own and run my own small video business. I went to college and majored in history. College is not about learning a skill or trade it is about learning how to think and work in the world. I was very naive coming out of highschool. Going to college gave me time to mature and figure out what I wanted to do. The industry will train you in the details but unless you have a solid foundation of who you are along with strong communication skills getting a job will be difficult. That said, while in college intern at a post facility. Learn the business from the inside. (The internship is the guild system revisited and it has worked for centuries why not use it.) After college I interned at a local post house and within six months without having to pay or be payed I learned more about this industry than any book, curriculum, or online tutorial. Like all professions, its about the people, and the time spent working with them is what really makes you a professional. I am where I want to be and college was a part of it but not the only part of the equation.

I think one of the big selling points is not have to spend money on the $30,000 Deck for small production companies. Also there will be no TC breaks!!!! (apparently) Tape is nice however but I guess DVDs could work as well. Maybe this will bring back assistant editors for video production!!!

I do. I bought a cable that has the Tascam 25-pin on one side and breaks out to 8 TRS on the other end which I have in my patch bay. That way I can use the 4 analog XLR connectors to hook up to a rental deck to output my show. At this point I am still really only using two of the eight channels. Go Figure.

You need to change your sequence settings to match what the video you imported is. The default for a timeline is DV. You should then re-edit the material into the timeline and you should be able to play it back without the red bar and rendering.

Amen Brother. It is really nice to see the highlighted clips of the remaining clips to be captured tick away. The ability to comment while your digitizing is really nice too. One day Avid and Apple will become great lovers and work together in a beautiful symbiotic relationship without any lawsuits or fist fights. One day…..

Sex and the City is full of these kinds of transitions and they are seemless and highly effective as they let the story progress smoothly.

What your looking for is already in FCP. Go to the effects tab and twirl through until you find something called Flicker. It has settings for how frequently the picture flickers. Its great and if you add a matt to mask the the edges you get the effect you are looking for.

Make sure your timeline settings are set to ulimited RT and to display the highest quaility video. not low or medium. (Click the button in the upper lefthand corner of the Timeline.) It is very confusing and easy to mess that up. I had the same problems when I started to get cute with those buttons.
