Hi there. The short answer is you can’t do it. There is a layer built into the flare that tints the whole comp – this is why you can see the edges no matter what you try other then feather. I ended up taking the plunge and purchasing Optical Flares – haven’t looked back since. Hopefully they will get around to fixing it at some point.

Like the post above says, you can have limited joy with a balance of feather, boundarys and intensity – but it’s frustrating. Video Copilot’s optical flares is the best product I found

    Pioneer Pro Plasmas:

Could only really find the 50 inch one (they don’t have ANY listed on the european Pioneer site?) which is way too big for us I think. Something around 24 would be much better for us I feel.

    Cheers though

    Sorry: and the final format.

Its basically a series that was intended for web (hence not having this already) but the client are now saying they want to put it on TV. So it needs to hit broadcast standard.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Yes its for a grade, or should I say color correction for on-line. I’ve been looking around and there aren’t really many to rent. From what I can deduce the Matrox has a question mark over its head regarding quality, the black magic is rumoured not to have a calibration utility so its AJA. So far I’m thinking…

The AJA 3G and Sony PMD-2451W combo if we are going to buy. Total cost before VAT is potentially £4,200

I’ll look at Pioneer now you mention it though.

Cheers – you have no idea how useful this is

October 5, 2010 at 3:31 pm in reply to: Render Farm?

Walter Soyka: I’ve done it, both with the watch folder method, and by manually invoking aerender. It works, but network render requires fast storage and a fast network.

I’ve got both fast storage and a fast network so it really should work. I’ve done the folder method and the scanner can see the folder, it just doesn’t pick up the project so to speak.

Walter Soyka: What exactly is the error message? Does it create an entry in the render engine’s log?

It doesn’t create an entry in the render log. Basically the flashing text that says ‘checking in 5, 4, 3….’ when it gets to 0 flicks up with the folder name and says invaid or something similar. It’s almost too fast to see, but its there. The odd thing is that the machine that created it doesn’t seem to have a problem. I wonder if there is an update issue between versions?

As far as machine spec, macbook pro, 4 GB ram, 1/2 tb 7200rpm drive, dual 2.3 Ghz processor, latest OS, CS5. Things like FCP work like a charm but AE just grinds to a halt and takes the machine with it every time.

I’ll read through that doc on performance and hopefully something will shine through. Just used the 8 core macpro downstairs for the same job, and it took an hour. long but not THAT long. Cheers for the help

Hey I’m sure you’ve probably moved on from this now, but I made a 3d cube, precomp’d it, suck vc reflect on it, and spun it, and it worked. Looked like a table top. I might be missing something but it the hardest point was getting the anchor point in the right place. Anyway, hope you got there in the end.

October 5, 2010 at 10:59 am in reply to: Render Farm?

    Heya,

thanks for the link it was exactly what I was looking for. Can I just ask if anyone has had managed to set up a render farm using AE’s render engine successfully? I’ve set up the watch folder as per AE’s instructions, saved my project and have an image sequence in the render queue. However when the machines with the render engine on them scan the watch folder, they bypass the project, seeming to flick up something about it being invalid. I can’t for the life of me figure out whats going on. I’ve tried a bunch of different image sequence settings, and now I’ve followed this video and he’s settings are the same as mine…. I’m a bit lost. My laptop is saying 8 hours to render a 2.5d still thats 10 seconds long if I do it locally…. I’m thinking either my computer has an issue or AE’s render on a mac sucks balls.

    Cheers for any insight

I love you all. If you were all very hot females I would treat each and every one of you to dinner 😉

Thanks, I thought I had to be missing something obvious. Cheers. I did however put myself in a world of pain after I found that switch (thanks to your posts). Made a cube and wanted to spin it on the corner…. who knew getting a box to stand on its tip in 3d space could be so hard. Still didn’t manage it, I just gave up – thanks everyone for all the help though!

I’m sure I’ll have some more problems for you all soon – but thanks again for your time, it really helped out a lot!

    Hi there.

In your example the problem was that the reflection was at an odd angle. If you watch the tutorial at 3:17 he goes over this problem.

    https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/reflection_plug-in/

I’ve made projects where the camera pan’s around the object and now had any problems. Am I misunderstanding what’s going wrong for you?

    Cheers

Fair enough but ‘Tint’ is the one you want. Short of that stick an adjustment layer on the top and throw some ‘curves’ on it. I’d still go with tint though…..
