Yeah I generally put all media related to a single project into one event. And in your case I’d either discard the individual card hierarchy entirely, or I’d create a keyword for each card to being with. Then further sort by actual content once I’d had a chance to go through stuff.

Try the free trial- does not require purchase and is the same version as 10.0.1:

Unfortunately you can’t. As mentioned in the manual:

Important: Create custom roles and subroles with care. Custom roles (and the names of custom roles) cannot be edited or removed from the roles list. However, you can change the role assignments of clips at any time.”

Not that I know of other than un-mounting the drive manually before launching FCP X or writing your backups as disk images instead of file by file. You definitely do not want multiple copies of the same FCP projects and events existing on the same system as this will cause you grief in FCP X.

Instead I’d suggest a slight change to your backup strategy- only mount the backup drive when FCP X is not running and unmount it when backups are complete. Lots of backup software can do this exact thing on a schedule automatically to avoid active file conflicts- I noticed Sync Sync Sync even mentions this in their tech support as possible through Apple Script. https://homepage.mac.com/nsekine/SYW/software/english/sync3/

Other apps have this function built in, such as Super Duper. https://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

Couple things to try- trash preferences: https://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

If that doesn’t work, delete the FCP app and re-install from the App Store. If that doesn’t work try moving the projects and events onto an external drive and then un-mounting it.

Also make sure the graphics card is *not* on this list: https://support.apple.com/kb/ht4664

September 21, 2011 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Are there any 3rd Party Programs that can use FCPX XML?

Yeah the onus is on developers at this point. So if you really want to see it happen for a particular app, let the developers of it know. That said, the XML spec they’ve put out for X is fairly streamlined and simple to understand. Shouldn’t be moving mountains for a dev with experience in XML integration.

I”m guessing an FCP 7 translator will not be impossible. If you do a quick export of your XML from an X project you’ll see the XML is very understandable- as XML generally is. It’s wide open for an enterprising (no pun intended) developer to take it a step further.

Hmm- I’d imagine if that feature were enabled Apple would tout it on the updates page but they don’t. So it’s not really ‘DOA’ so much as ‘never promised.’

    Instead it says:
“Now you can import and export Final Cut Pro X project and Event information via a rich XML format. XML interchange enables a wide range of third-party workflows, including high-end visual effects, color grading, and media asset management. Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve, Square Box System’s CatDV, and many other third-party applications will offer XML-based workflows with Final Cut Pro X.”

Sounds like this is still a third party opportunity for now.

September 7, 2011 at 12:30 am in reply to: Why does rendering/Transcoding stop in FCPX?

Hmm- well like I said it should just return to background rendering without being touched. Of course any thing you do in the timeline will stop it. I generally keep my delay at 30 seconds. Then I know it won’t do anything while I’m actually working but will only kick in when I go onto something not editing related. Some folks turn it off entirely when it impacts performance too much. And remember you can always force a render with Control-R on a selection.

What’s your Background Render “Start After” delay set for in Playback Preferences? Generally speaking you shouldn’t have to manage it manually. It should do its thing automagically.
