  • Why does rendering/Transcoding stop in FCPX?

Posted by Don Scioli on September 6, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Does anyone know why transcoding and /or rendering stops in FCPX seemingly for no reason…then you have to go to the background tasks window and click around to get it going again. The it stops again, more clicking etc.

I’m using a MacPro 3.2 Ghz, 16 GB ram, GTX video cards so speed should not be a problem.

    Thanks in advance.

If skimming is turned on and you are skimming through clips (or even moving your mouse past the clips) it will temporarily halt rendering/background processing.

    Maybe that is it?

What’s your Background Render “Start After” delay set for in Playback Preferences? Generally speaking you shouldn’t have to manage it manually. It should do its thing automagically.

Prefs are set to auto background render with after 5 sec checked. It seems to stop if the clip in question is selected by not playing.

Hmm- well like I said it should just return to background rendering without being touched. Of course any thing you do in the timeline will stop it. I generally keep my delay at 30 seconds. Then I know it won’t do anything while I’m actually working but will only kick in when I go onto something not editing related. Some folks turn it off entirely when it impacts performance too much. And remember you can always force a render with Control-R on a selection.
