  • FCP X won’t open up after the update.

Got a call from a panicked friend. He updated to 10.1 last night. But after the update FCP X never opened again. Just the beachball.

He spent the entire day with apple reps on the phone. The best they could advice was to re-install the OS. Another interesting thing is that there is no way of going back to 10.0 version. Apple reps confrimed that.

    It just keeps getting better!

“The creative person wants to be a know-it-all. He wants to know about all kinds of things: ancient history, nineteenth-century mathematics, current manufacturing techniques, flower arranging, and hog futures. Because he never knows when these ideas might come together to form a new idea. It may happen six minutes later or six months, or six years down the road. But he has faith that it will happen.” — Carl Ally

Couple things to try- trash preferences: https://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

If that doesn’t work, delete the FCP app and re-install from the App Store. If that doesn’t work try moving the projects and events onto an external drive and then un-mounting it.

Also make sure the graphics card is *not* on this list: https://support.apple.com/kb/ht4664

Create New User with Admin status. Delete all login items for that user. Reboot into the new user. Being a new user it won’t look at any of the other user settings. This will let you know if it’s a user issue or a system issue.

If the problem happens in the new user admin, then it’s likely a system issue. Delete FCPX, Repair disk permissions. Download Apple OS Combo Update (MUST be the Combo Update) and install that. That’ll often clean up issues that happen with Software Update (which I advise agains using for OS updates). Then download and reinstall FCPX.

I started teaching my first FCPX class tonight.
    First off it went great.
The only problem was that I couldnt open my Events and Projects (sitting on a external).
The school had 10.0 and I blessed my files with 10.1.
Oh well we started from scratch anyway.

They should jump on 10.0.1 update ASAP. There’s no reason why not to given the new features and bug fixes. Unlike any other .0.1 release, this release updates the projects (much as a major legacy FCP release would). I can imagine the frustration students might have running in to a 0.0 issue when you know that’s gone in 0.1. Roles alone is worth the free update.

Yeah, seriously, did you backup before you installed the new software?

    Always a good idea.
