Hi Cassius — I took your advice and aded another layer in front of the portal to give it some parallax and added some light reflecting from the portal itself. Thoughts?

    Thanks Cassius good points.

Currently I have all the elements that make up the portal inside a single comp which I’ve made into a 3d layer. Any tips on how I can give the illusion it is on an additional plane?

Hey Steve thanks great tips…when you say jack up the black levels on my monitor how exactly would I do that on an iMac?

Also as far as the flare I totally get what you’re saying on that….I have the pro pack for optical flares so I can add that.

Hahaa…well thanks Richard. Yea videocopilot is where I got the tutorial and saber plugin for the laser.

The blast is a work in progress, but I wanted feedback on that too so thanks. My biggest challenge was the compositing of the robot…as far as the blast though do you think it’s not strong enough and needs to be more of an impact?

April 18, 2017 at 3:10 pm in reply to: Which Colorspace Should I be working in?

Interesting…so if I’m going to do color in Premiere or Speedgrade with intent to publish on YouTube and Vimeo I should be using which of these options in AE?

    1) sRGB IEC61966-2.1
    2) HDTV (Rec. 709)
    3) HDTV (Rec. 709) 16-235

I’ve just tested each of the three I just listed and they make minimal impact to what I already was working in which was colorspace set to none.

April 1, 2017 at 10:11 pm in reply to: Color Grading and Correction VFX in AE or Premiere?

Dave yep i agree for sure and that makes sense too, but in AE I have several 3d elements being placed in the footgae that need to blend in. So when my footage has been color corrected should i match up the 3d elements with the footage before exporting to color grade?

  • Do you match your 3d elements with color correction to its scene before or after you export to your color grading program? Or so you just do all color corrections and grading in your resolve or premiere grading preference?

February 13, 2017 at 4:59 pm in reply to: Can you use Mocha Tracking with Maya?

    Yes pretty basic.

Tracked footage in Mocha (free version that came with AE) and I have an animator who needs to use that tracking data in Maya in order to animate some 3d elements that I will then composite back in AE once he renders several passes for me to import.

Mocha lite only copies to clipboard or to a text file. He is saying he needs an .FBX format and I notice Mocha pro does that but not the version I have.

Thanks for that refresher, but what do you mean by “linearizing your working color profile”?

Also is it safe to assume I can work in 8 bit and later change it to 16 bit for the final render without issues? Basically switching back and forth to monitor as I go along?
