January 30, 2017 at 10:11 pm in reply to: Panasonic Varicam LT Pro Res footage not copying to libraryMany thanks. The person responsible for backups on our shoot did just copy the card (in its entirety) to a folder on a hard drive and did not ‘clone’ it. However the card does appear in FCPX as it should (i.e. all the clips appear) and the option to leave files in place is greyed out (as expected for this type of media) so I believe it is treating at as a ‘camera’. Essentially everything happens like normal just the ProRes 422 footage stays in place and the AVC Intra footage comes across, very strange

Thanks Bret, so what you are saying is I should set my project setting to 1920 x 1080 now? At the moment the whole documentary is SD but I have HDV master files. I am soon to re-link all my clips with HDV masters in a new project. Should I set that project to 1440 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080? FCPX will have to render every clip if I do this but I take your point about the animation. Fundamentally I don’t understand how rendering works. it creates a new file right using prores 422? So it will do this for my whole project if I make my project setting 1920 x 1080 except for the animate elements. Would it not be better to get the animator to make a 1440 x 1080 after effects project with pixel ratio of 1.333 then export a full res master and use compressor to make a 1920 x 1080 h.264 version for web etc? Any thoughts appreciated

April 29, 2014 at 2:46 am in reply to: Audio 6db louder in Browser than in project[Nick Toth] “I know that certain audio mixers will “dip” a mono signal when it’s panned to the center versus full left or right. There are also mixers which compensate by keeping the level the same throughout the pan.
“I work in news and often pan different audio left or right as a work around to split the tracks before sending. In FCPX you definitely loose volume after you have panned by at least 6db so I don’t think it compensated at all. Not sure how that observation relates to my initial observation. Any ideas? Its defiantly not due to ‘losing’ a track of audio as I’m working in a 1 track mono source
thanks

[Don Smith] “Possibly “720×576 Anamorphic” describes footage that BECOMES 720 on the horizontal when it is stretched (displayed) from its anamorphic state”
720 x 576 PAL anamorphis SD footage becomes 1024 when displayed. In FCPX my project settings are PA: SD Anamorphic. When using the inspector FCPX seems to thing I have a horizontal resolution of 2×576 so 1152. I’m baffled.
[Loren Risker] “you can choose any resolution you want, so maybe it would be easier to work with projects set to 640×640?”
Sure but I edit news and I’d like to be able just to export using a compressor preset rather than creating a new project. It must be possible to do this I just need to work out how much to crop in compressor from the left and right but my logical calculations have given me squashed results

January 14, 2014 at 9:19 am in reply to: best method for downscaling from hd to sdHi I’m coming to this a bit late but I was wondering if compressor 4.1 has changed any of your advice? I only have FCPX and compressor. It seems that FCPX does a good job according to Kati. Should I still have a HD timeline then export to SD using compressor presets or shall I just Edit in an SD timeline? Cheers I’ll do some tests but I’d be interested in your thoughts. I have to deliver to mp4
