I was having problems exporting and was able to narrow it down(with the help of Adobe phone support) to a problem with encoder and frame holds/clip speed adjustments.

Does your timeline have any frame holds or clips that have been slowed down or speed up?

If so export frame holds as .tif/jpeg etc. and re insert into the timeline. For clips with adjusted speed try exporting just the clip at the desired speed (try using AE if premiere will not export these smaller files) then re-importing into your original project.

    Hi Mike,

I had the same problem when I started using cs4 (it was installed on a machine that had had cs3 which was uninstalled then cs4 installed in its place). If this sounds like your system…

The only solution I could find was to eventually wipe the system drive and reinstall cs4. After that even the legacy projects allowed the cutting and pasting to selected tracks.

Before the nuclear option however, have you updated premiere to the most current version?

    Hi Ross,

Actually I did get it figured out. I ended up reinstalling the OS and CS4 and running tests on the RAM and MB. It looks like the motherboard is malfunctioning and will need to be replaced. Thank you for helping me to troubleshoot the problem. Any I have been looking at this motherboard

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358

The videoguys website recommends gigabyte motherboards and I couldn’t find anything overtly negative or positive about how they interact with CS4.

    Any recommendations?

    Hi Ross,

I am running 64 bit and would agree with you about exporting in pieces however I have exported my problem sequences many times in the past week (previous project versions will not export either). Nothing has changed about my system profile.

I will give a shot at exporting in pieces though.

I was making final changes to my VO track and trying to export. I started experiencing crashes in encore every time I imported an .m2v too so I think maybe a reinstall might be needed.

    Thank you for your ideas.

    March 12, 2010 at 1:33 pm in reply to: CS4 and windows7 64bit experience

    Hi Jon,

This is a new system build with Win 7 within the last few weeks so even though the projects were legacy the cache files (render/conform) were created the first time I opened the projects. I don’t normally edit while conforming/indexing but I do sometimes use encoder to render a second project while the other caches. So maybe that caused some of the cache files to be corrupted.

Right now I cleaned the media cache and will start over hopefully to better results.

Are there any other reasons that the files would go bad?

    Thanks.

    Hi John,

I am running with most current premiere 4.2.1. I did not have the match name problem in vista and so was surprised when it came up in win7. Same for the re-indexing and re-conforming problem. (it also happens after a project has been open for awhile too.) I was hoping that there was some way to change my configuration to fix the problem.

I guess I have to live with it and the lost time which when added to the crashes under win7 is starting to add up.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Hi Alex,

I have had this problem a few times. The easiest fix I found was to use mpeg streamclip to rip a video only dv stream or avi from the VOB file using desired settings (fps etc). The just sync that up with the audio track within premiere.

I am running with external USB storage for my scratch drives while I wait for my caldigit RAID to arrive. I know the USB drive is a problem I am just surprised by the performance gap between the two OS’s under the same editing conditions.

Also have a matrox mxo2 mini for realtime preview running.

Tam-“Because ultimately every Adobe problem has a workaround, and there is one major advantage to using Adobe — and that is dynamic link. In our particular workflow we have a lot of “back-and-forthing” between Premiere and After Effects, and the ability to do this via dynamic linking has been the clincher which has kept us with Adobe.
What follows may resemble a rant:
There shouldn’t be a need for a work around. The software should function and do so predictably. When it comes to user interface I would choose CS4 especially because of the ability to work with many diverse codecs but when it comes to reliability I would choose FCP. FCP is a toyota while CS4 is a fiat. While working with CS4 I spend a lot of time finding and using workarounds to supplement the malfunctions of dynamic linking and bad code than I ever have using FCP. With FCP I simply know what will work and what won’t.

    Hi Nick,

That sounds like a great idea. It will demonstrate to your customer exactly what they are paying for. If they prefer a more “realistic” style then perhaps you could demonstrate a professionally shot handheld testimonial as well. You could also offer the client a package that includes a lower price for these amateur videos. If they prefer that to the professional videos then find a way to charge them for it in a way that doesn’t lower the overall value of your product.
A professional solution should mean more options for your client flip and iphone (with fancy zacuda rig) should be among them.
    Good luck.
